collapsed oil breather hose ..

looks like my mot has uncovered other nasties.

just a couple questions,

1 the oil breather hose, can you uncollapse it if it's collapsed or is this just wear and tear and must be replaced?

i see the coiled stuff that angelo used on his van, and also there's a fuel filter between a breather hose and the carb, are they things i can do with my dg petrol engine and pierburg 2e3? what's the advantage to the fuel filter there, keeps the carb cleaner, is it standard or is this a mod?

2 how does it affect the running if this oil breather is collapsed? would it raise hc/affect idle/lumpy running/cold start? could this have also caused the crankcase gasket underneath the engine to seep oil that might not seep out if the pressure in the engine wasn't so high due to collapsed oil breather?

However before he re-manufactured the part I replaced mine with the DF variant pipe which is still available from VW. Whilst it is shorter and does not have the same bends it does fit pefectly fine it just routes differently around the other surrounding pipes. Had it on now for over 6 months with no problems

Buy the Df one, it works and is much cheaper than any other solution.

I think (although might be wrong) that its the constant supply of a hot oil mist that causes the pipe to collapse form the inside out. The others are less likely to need doing given that water is kinder on them than the oil.....

I would imagine that it wouldn't make a massive difference to the running. The point of it is to relieve the crankcase pressure. In a perfect world, this air and oil mist wouldn't be fed back through the carb, but we can't really just let it fall out into the atmosphere, hence the piece of pipe. Given that even in its collapsed state it will probably provide some 'breathing' benefits it is unlikley to cause your Idle/HC/lumpy running.

The quickest way is to pull it off (at the case end) and see what happens - if the engine sounds happier then thats it. Don't run it for too long though, or your engine bay will be covered in a fine mist of oil.

If your van is anything like mine, the crank seal will be unrelated - this seems to be a bit of a 'weak point' on higher milage engines, and prone to leaking. I'm doing mine soon, as I'm putting in about 1l of oil every 200 miles....

I'd follow the good advice above and replace the pipe, but I don't think it will help you on your quest for lower HC for the MOT....

I can't see them on there at the moment, best bet would be to send Baxter an email and ask if he's getting more in; sales@brickwerks.co.uk

I take it you read the topic? VW did sell the DF engine version which fits a DG as I have one on my van as I stated above along with the part number and cost

Most likely Baxter has none of the silicone oil breather hoses in stock at the moment

My breather collapsed on a 2.1fi engine, the crankcase preasure caused oil to be forced out of the pulley end oil seal.
Resulting in a muky engine and a few drips on the road.

Yep.

Sadly, due to the hours I work I have no ability to get to a VW dealer - so buying online is infinitely easier.

Brickwerks are out of stock at the moment. Mine has not collapsed, but it is perished in places.

Just an update, I went for an alternative solution and bought some flexible silicone hose instead. 19mm bore with wire embedded. Suitable for vacuum applications so should not collapse, and suitable for oil/temps of this application too. Bought from Ebay.

Paid £19 for a metre, so still plenty left if I find another application for it!
