Just gained myself an AFN engine but unfortunately no ECU.
Firstly, do I need to go down the route of finding an ECU or is it possible to simply change the fuel pump? (I have a mech pump of a N/A 1.9D) or, would a different pump be needed?
If I need an ECU, what car would I need one from?

Hi Mick welcome , The 1.9D N/A fuel pump will not be of much use for that engine type due to it not having an aneroid device + most probably only having the 17mm main spindle with narrow width bearings I've been building MTDi hybrid pumps to fit various engines including the VW TDi's and think this might be the best option for the engine you've bought , as for the turbo I'm planning on using the same type on one of my next projects because of the power gains throughout the rev range , bit of work setting them up with link rods/cables , pic below shows a TDi VNT with throttle link and reworked boost control , You might have to fit a simpler turbo if fitting the engine at 50 degrees
