Valve settings

Post by Steve Goddard »

Hi
Could anyone run me through the basics of valve settings for a water cooled 1.9?
The Haynes manual is very vague .
What I need to know is the Crankshaft rotation direction as on one website it suggests finding cylinder one and having the notch on the cranrankshaft pulley lined up with the crankcase join and the rotor arm facing the notch in the distributor. Then it says wind ANTICLOCKWISE on the crankshaft and repeat the procedure for the other cylinders,is this the right way to do it?
Another says to have the rotor arm facing each corresponding cylinder and repeat the procedure.
Plus which cylinder is number one looking in from the rear?
Thanks in anticipation :D

find TDC on Compression stroke (both valves shut) as piston rises, on any cylinder.
with the rocker cover off you should see this. A good tip is to push a cork (slightly) into the plug hole and when it pops out your on the right stroke.
Matters not what you do first.
I reset my tappets by winding out the adjuster untill there's a visible gap, then winding in to ZERO lash, then winding in a further 1 1/2 turns.

Thanks Kev. Thats made it clear apart from the engine rotaional direction. So ALL tappets are 1 1/2 turns? and obviously both inlet and exhaust can both be adjusted at TDC on each cylinder at the same time?
Eeeeeeeeee Im looking forward to getting away for a weekend :D
