Fuel Drain Back

Post by Titus A Duxass »

JX 1,6 TD.
For some reason the fuel is draining back into the tank when I park up over a couple of days.

At the Syncro 25 bash we were parked for 4 days with the righthand side lower than the left with a brim full tank, she started fine on the Monday.

At home with half a tank, again with a slight righthand side down attitude, she would not start, I had to spin her over on the key for about 15 secs before she kicked into life.

It has only just started to do this and when the problem happened last week I did check the fuel lines from filter to engine - they were both empty.

Also, there are diesel drops on the tailgate and rear bumper (not at lot) and there is a stink of diesel.

I've looked around the engine bay are there are no obvious signs of leakage nor are there any "puddles" under the bus.

I suspect that there is a leak somewhere in the fuel system, is there any way that I can pressurise the system with diesel to assist with locating the leak?

I'd check that your tank's not creating a vaccum too. That will cause it to suck the fuel back after you shut off.

Weird that your getting diesel spots on the tailgate and bumper. Wouldn't think even if it was leaking it could show up there. :?

Good point, if it wasn't honking down I'd go and check that.

Parked up after driving home tonight and there's a strong smell of Rudolf's finest.
I could also see it on the puddles by the side of the road.

Another inspection of the engine bay, this time it's easy to see that the braided rubber pipes are weeping.
They've probably gone porous over the winter while she was standing in the Parkhaus.

Everything that leaks seems to end up there - I think it's an aerodynamic quirk...

Any leak of oil etc will all ways show up on the back ans there is a massive vacuum behind the van as you drive, likewise if you smell exhaust fume's whilst driving its the rear door seal!
