Re: life span of a 1.6td
Slightly off topic...my father inlaw sold on his 1.6 VW passat to his nephew a few years back, it had done 243,000miles without any major work.
Chris (the nephew) ran it for another 2 years and another 25,000miles before scrapping it.
1.6TD can do 200K plus if treated right.

Re: life span of a 1.6td
if the oil is changed regularily, engine service items adhered to and all is well at the mo then you could see 250k I have seen a few with this much on
knock of 60k+ if you tow a lot or thrash the noolies out of it.

Its pretty impressive when you consider that its between 220,000 and 250,000 miles to the moon. I wonder how many new (non VW) vans coming off the production lines today could do that sort of milage

Re: life span of a 1.6td
Sorry,
Mine had done 125000kms when it was deemed in need of major work. I think it had been boiled in the past and the disconnection of the aux pump had probably assisted the head in cracking....

Re: life span of a 1.6td
Mine had 310,000km on it, not sure of history as it was from Germany and not much paperwork. Just got tired trying to start it and putting oil in every 100 miles
Tdi in now with 80,000 miles on it, will be pleased if that gets to the same miles.
Re: life span of a 1.6td
Slight tangent, are the above figures also relevant to a 1.6 diesel?
As it doesn't have a turbo, in my extremely basic mechanical knowledge, the reduced complexity of the engine would mean it "could" last longer?

Re: life span of a 1.6td
Non turbo diesels have generally spent their whole life being thrashed in order to reach a reasonable speed, so I think they actually tend to die quicker...

Ours had done 163K, but i replaced it with another JX that had covered only 67k with all reciepts and MOTs to prove it. The only reason i replaced it was because the piston rings were going. When i got it out i found metal splinters every where and what appeared to be a crack on one of the pistons and another in the head.
The one i have now gets serviced every 5k and has been for the last 9 years.
