Westy Charger Wiring

Post by jason.nazen »

My original Westy battery charger gave up on me and I have read the articles on fitting a new charger however the existing wiring has me baffled. I've checked the continuity of the -ve brown cable from the charger and both this cable and the -ve supply cable supply to the electrical heater which is in the trunking it is not connected unless I have the 240VAC connected? does anyone know if this is correct or where the brown cable is connected to the body so I can trace it back?

iirc westy charge only 4 wires. 2 wires in 240v, and 2 wires out 1 to leisure batt 1 to starter batt.

Thanks for response, I have two 240 wires in Live and Neutral but three wires out via a three pin plug. One Red Yellow which goes to Leisure Battery, One Red Black that goes to Engine Battery and a Brown which I assumed should be the -ve but which doesn't appear to be? There is also a red and brown for the electrical heater and I was going to utilise this for some 12V sockets but again the brown doesn't seem to be connected to anything and I can't find where the browns are connected to the bodywork or 12V -ve.

OK part sussed it, There is a brown from the charger which loops into the electrocal heater which loops onto a ring of which non are connected to -ve, I assume that if the heater was fitted it would be connected to the bodywork! Does the charger not use a -ve then?

The brown wire from the three pin plug should go to earth usually under the right rear seat.

Thanks for that, under the back seat I had the brown to the charger, a brown for the aux heating and a two browns with a ring crimp on. I had assumed that one of them went back to earth however on stripping back the sleeving they are all just connected together with no actual earth connection. I have now connected the ring crimp to earth and all is well. Thanks for the help.
