Starting Problem

Post by Robinho08 »

Hi there,

Wonder if anyone could lend any advice please?

My T25 1.9(WC) wont start, it turns over but just wont start, had a look at the dizzy, cleaned everything up and they all seem fine. Doesnt seem to be a spark though when we took the HT off.

Just before this problem occured, I used to hear a knock noise as the van started up, I dont know if this is even connected to the problem. :(

Did you take the centre lead of the dizzy and check for sparks ?
Take care doing this, don't touch the HT lead at all when the ign is on, the voltage on these electronic systems really hurts and can actually kill !!

If no spark there, it is likely to be (in order of likely-ness) :-

A - a loose or broken wire
B - a duff coil (borrow a replacement to try)
C - a duff ignition amplifier (the little black box on the front left side wall of the engine bay)
D - a duff "hall sensor" in the distributor (the thing that takes the place of old fashioned points - these rarely fail by the way)

It is unlikely to be anything to do with the knocking sound, mind you, do check that your dizzy shaft is actually rotating when you spin the engine over
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here
