L.E.D lighting . What and where?

Hey there crew.

Im wanting to get l.e.d lighting for the camper .. a strip light and a couple of down lighters and i was wondering if anyone knew the best ones to go for and the best place to buy them?

I got mine from B&Q £29.99 for four strips (12 LEDS per strip) the kit comes with the connectors and transformer (which you don't use) 2 colours either Blue or White...OR....£39.99 for multi coloured (RED/BLUE/GREEN/PURPLE/YELLOW) for the extra tenner you get a small wired controller which can be used to auto fade between colours or hold on one colour.
Look in the lighting secting and they are kitchen under lighters.
Also have several other LED options.

Ebay tends to list all the most up-to-date in LED lighting, much of which comes from the far east. You can also buy 12v LEDs in packs of 100 (with resistor included) so you can mount them anywhere, in cupboard edges, under seats etc etc. Ordered a lot of stuff from China and not had any probs to date.

i have never used l.e.d before .. do they give off a sufficient amount of light to light up the van? especially the strip lights?

None of them give the same light as a flourescent, BUT most of the time you only need background lighting (unless you've lost a contact lens or something) and they can give a very good light indeed depending on colour and strength of LEDs used. Worth noting though, that if you replace the festoon bulbs that light up when doors are opened vwith LEDs, they won't trigger an alarm system as they don't use enough current to trigger it. However, LEDS are so efficient, it makes sense to replace as many lights as you can with LEDs. For wild camps they're ideal as you'll be using much less power. I much prefer this route to inverters and such as you're more self contained.

surely its the door switch that triggers the alarm not the bulb

Yes but switch merely makes a circuit and the draw is so little, as far as the alarm is concerned, theres is no circuit

My alarm is designed to detect any rise in current consumption (amongst other things) and almost everything else will set the alarm off (electric window for instance) but it ignores the door lights. Works fine with a conventional bulb as that draws more current.

The switch itself doesn't draw current (uness it was straight across batt terminals) - its the bulb that does.

i was wondering if you guys knew how much light they actally give off...

for example the diffrence between the 12 or 48 linear light strips? do you know what a suitable size would be for lighing the van from above the hob area?
