Yes they are underpowered. 2 tonnes of bus with 54bhp.
Even the 2ltr is underpowered
But they are great fun, when they work
If you want a different engine then go for a porche or subaru, both flat (boxer), so will fit in the engine bay

Ooh... My eyes!
That CAPS LOCK is VERY BOLD. (and very difficult to read!)
Anyhows, now you've turned caps lock off...
Where abouts on the engine is the oil leak coming from? Left, right, front, rear or even from the top and running down?
Is this the only problem with the engine?
Oh... And yes, they are a bit small for a vehicle this big!
I have the 1600 CT engine in my van but it has been modified to give it a bit more poke and it's not too bad now.
Welcome to the club too!

Re: 1600 air cooled engine advice
it,s funny people say under powered,,my 1.9 rips from the lights ok so i have to find second pretty quick but for the areodinamics and rationaly thinking a camper normally does 60 mph in slow lane accept that and anything else is a bonus .i can do 80 but how often .as for matt black whats wrong with that?

Have you ever driven the 1600 CT engine powered van?

Still... as it's what I've got I'm sticking with it!

Re: 1600 air cooled engine advice
common leak areas on the CT's are:-
* Rocker covers (as with most VW Aircooled stuff!)
* Oil cooler - leaks and drops oil down over cylinders 3/4 then over the heat exchangers and onto the floor
* both ends of the crank -
* Behind the flywheel - oil dribbled out onto the floor where gearbox and engine mate
* Rarer but they also leak from the front of the engine (front being nearest your legs as you lean over into the engine bay) over the oil pump then onto the floor
* If failed or badly sealed on last strip/rebuild they can leak oil where cylinders are mated into the block
** If REALLY bad the can leak from the case halves but this is pretty rare
If yours is owt like mine then it leaks loads from everywhere!
Welcome to the gang and welcome to the CT clique

Re: 1600 air cooled engine advice
Well, you won't get a 1600 beetle engine in it as there won't be clearance for the fan housing (crewcabs yes). If its actually an Aircooled van (ie no bottom front grill or rad) then you'll have to modify much to really upgrade it. You can put a bored-out bug engine in but you'd need to make a box to fit over engine hatch or raise rear loading area to that of a type2 etc etc.

Re: 1600 air cooled engine advice
easiest upgrade is fit a 2000 Aircooled motor and box in it.
