Re: ah booked me summer holiday
we find it hard to get much further south as we always seem to find somewhere nice to stop and we stay there

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
I want to show the girls where we used to go to B.C. ... the St. Tropez coast round to Monaco and the Ardeche, where I went canoeing as a 16 year old.
We plan to pillage and gluttonise several vineyards, creameries and boulangeries first and then to the Med coast between Narbonne and Sete for some advanced level beach sleeping and badminton lessons for 15 year olds
aka being rendered down by a 15 year old who plays badminton at least once a week at Wirksworth leisure center

how much was the ferry from portsmouth to le havre if you dont mind me asking, i looked a few weeks ago and couldnt find cheaper than £400 , portsmouth is easier for us (we are on isle of wight) but the ferry from dover to calais was only about £70

ok ta
will have a look with them, is definately the nicer journey once the other side and a lot easier for us just roll off the iow ferry drive round the corner and get on the next one, but the £250 saved by going to dover will buy an awful lots of baguettes!!! or wine come to that!

We have debated Dover in the past but from where I am the drive is a nightmare, plus the extra couple of hundred miles I would have to drive the other side. I'm happy to pay the money for the portsmouth route.

For those where Dover is more convenient, I recommend Norfolkline to Dunkirk. I booked our August hols just before Xmas and it is £49 return for the van and four adults. Bargain

We've used them in the past (3 times) but they quoted £150 odd for this year

Same here - used to use the Dunkirk crossing loads but every time I've gone for a quote on them in the last year or two its been sky-high. I tend to use the tunnel these days.

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
The cheap campsite in Britain seems to be disappearing, but in France they are safe and sound. The British CL's are still good value, but the good ones are usually well booked full of the silver tourists. We just paid 25 quid at Sunny Lynn in Lynmouth Devon, and the showers etc were quite poor. The prices seem to have sky rocketed over the last 5 years. On Corsica we were paying 25 quid for a campsite with a pool, restaurant, walk to the beach and views of the blue Med. Keep getting sent cheap ferry prices for the island, could get there for less than 200 quid if you are not fussy about the ferry time. That's what we will do next year. Just wish Tesco vouchers did Portsmouth or Newhaven to france, not just Dover Harwich or Ireland.
This year we are doing Harwich to hook of holland. Only 50 miles to amsterdam, take the bikes. Really looking forward to it, and all on Tesco's vouchers.

We rarely do campsites in England anymore.

You can use tesco vouchers for the Siblu sites in France.

I love the Harwich ferry. Drive on, have a bite to eat, couple of beers, watch a bit of telly on the laptop in the nice cosy cabin, wake up just down the road from the 'Dam.
Sadly, it was booked up for my forthcoming birthday trip, so I'm driving up from Calais...

I used LD at Easter. I was not impressed by either their booking service - poor, or the ship itself - it must be about 30 years old. The service and food on board were also sub standard. They did not even have any sandwiches on board! The best part of the service was it got us to France cheaply. I have tried to raise these matters with LD but their feedback system will not let me through. I hope your experience is better.
