2nd gear selection problems

Post by mikec »

Hi folks

My 1985 4-speed van doesn't like going into 2nd gear sometimes.

The front of the gear shifter mechanism is as near as I'm ever going to get to properly adjusted.

What should I be looking for?

Thanks

yes, I would recommend changing to synthetic or semi sythetic GL4 spec oil, eg GSF old part number 98048A
draining the oil will show you the condition of the box by the fines buikt up on the magnet and new oil will improve the shift.
Second gear is always poor when cold as the synchro struggles to move the thick cold oil out of the way so it can slow down the gear so it will synchronise in selection, after a mile or so usually fine, but hurried second gear selection just knocks more and more metal off the dog teeth exascerbating the problem
