ah booked me summer holiday
'Ile de re' in France. Site looks great and right next to the beach. Ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre. Stop halfway down at a riverside aires and then drive down next day , pick up lots of cheap plonk then cross the bridge near La Rochelle. 10 days there without moving the van so walkies and bike riding a must. Stop halfway back on return journey at another aires then back to Le Havre for ferry to blighty.

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
sounds nice..!
Does anyone know what the general cost of holidaying in France is at the moment with the crappy exchange rate (food, camping fees, petrol etc) - is it expensive? I'd like to do a holiday there but worried it might work out a bit much. Would like to go from Newhaven too which isnt the cheapest of crossing routes either.

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
Dover <>Calais for the LT and 2 adults 1 kid = £60 return .
We will be staying mostly on the Aires so anything from 0 to 10 euros per night (14 days hopefully)
We are also staying on a municipal campsite on the Dronne so about 12 euro's a night (about 6 nights)
Food and Drink doesn't really count as you have to eat and drink wherever you stay ,Wine is still cheap (ask Jed) and food is also cheaper than the UK
Diesel/Petrol/LPG is about the same
I know Jed did the 3 weeks for a Grand a couple of years ago when they came with us ,they did everything and more so I'm hoping to do about the same this summer.
Other stuff like euro break down cover is a bit more to add to the bill.
Try and book a two week holiday to somewhere and then tally stuff up , fights, taxes, hotel, food, drink,to and from the airport, car hire insurances etc etc , your looking at 2.5k easy , and at the end of it a sun tan and some pictures ,use the van ,enjoy it , and at the end of it you will have a sun tan (hopefully) loads of pictures of the van in the sun , loads of cheap wine that you can carry back in the van , and of course loads of memories and best of all the van , ready for the next trip ...

yeah, I'm comparing it to the cost of staying in the UK though - ie 2 weeks UK camping vs 2 weeks in France...

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
We've booked the return ferry (£82.50 paid for in December) and 'France Passion' (£22.50 paid for in January) we intend to use the F.P. and Aire network to see the rural and gastronomic side of France and a quiet beach holiday.
I expect to travel about 2500 miles, almost all on lpg, and the cost will be what it is, it's our main family holiday. If we couldn't afford it we wouldn't be there ..... the only thing I DO know is that it will be cheaper than staying on a UK campsite for 18 days in 'high' season. Where-ever you go be safe and have fun.

Re: ah booked me summer holiday
I can highly recommend a good Aire to use on your way down.
Search for Restaurant 'Bar Le Fief des Grisses' in google maps - the restaurant has a small field next to it - it is just North of Les Sables-d'Olonne.
Would be good if you follow the coast, but I reckon yo will stay in land a bit to get the direct route

Sounds good. We were that way a couple of years back when we went to St Hilaire de riez. Only got down as far as Bretignolles sur mer.
