Pierburg SE3 Carb cleaning and refurb kit problems

Post by john_artist »

I have my carb off for general cleaning and fitting refurb kit. but I have a couple of problems I hope someone can please help me with?

Info: 1989 1.9 DG Pierburg SE3

On the Choke pull down diaphragm pipe, I could not blow or suck through it, even when taken off completely! I found it had a small brass nozzle nestling about an inch inside the pipe! It has a hole in one end, but the other end is completely sealed off? It is about a quarter of an inch long.
Question: Should this be there? Anybody heard of this or seen one before?

I have managed to take it out (after cutting about half an inch off the rubber pipe!) and the pipe is now clear and operates the diaphragm perfectly.
Have I done the right thing in taking it out? :?

In the refurb kit (From Birckwerks) there are about four very small rubber rings, two very small black paper gaskets (half an inch long with oval hole), one paper gasket about an inch and a half long by one inch, with six holes in it. Plus one larger circular rubber ring about two inch diameter.
The problem is that I cannot find anywhere on the carb where these items would (or should) go?

Help please? As this is the first SE3 I have ever taken apart! It's certainly a complicated beast!

er yes it should..it's the non return valve..and it makes the choke flap open slowly

and the pipe is now clear and operates the diaphragm perfectly.

yes that's how you test the flap operation by temporarily disconnecting the valve

Have I done the right thing in taking it out? :?

... I think not

The smaller rubber rings I believe are for the mixture needles. If you undo them and take them out you should see them. Turn them in first and count how many turns before fully seated before taking out though and do the reverse when refitting.
The larger ring is a seal between the water manifold and the choke assembly.
As for the others... I dunno!

I tried undoing the mixture needle screws, but they wouldn't budge either way?! I don't want to damage them, so am leaving them as they are. Will this be ok do you think?

Should be ok but a good test of these is to push thumb or finger over opening where screw is sitting and listen for a change in engine performance. If no change then seal is good but if a change is heard then you could have air passing by the seals.

Thanks. I'll try that when I have refitted it and started her up. Hopefully all will be good! :-)
