82 westy hi-top roof leak

Post by orkneychariot »

hi folks , i seem to be having a problem with the roof leaking , i'm getting water in the wardrobe/cupboard in the back of my westy. already tried tracing the leak and adding some sealant to a poss ingress place but to no avail, any ideas? how are the roofs sealed to the body and is it a mission impossible to remove the roof and reseal ????

i've looked at the wiki and archive sections and nothing has shown up , really baking my noodle now as i'll have to replace the wood in the wardrobe again if i can;t sort this soon

cheers jon

Are you sure its not not the tailgate seal? I was getting water in my wardrobe, replaced tailgate seal as i found a slightly damaged part at top, then no more leak

Hi there, Ive got a westy high top with the same issue, i've just changed the tailgate seal and waiting for a downpour to test (really difficult to close tailgate now!!!). When mines parked it leans slightly to the left rear, on the drive. The gutters are full of sealent and I notice a touch of rust in the gutter at this point, so if the seal fails to stop it I can only assume that its entering at this corner. I need to do some repairs to the roof so pysching myself up to clear all the gutters and repaint. I understand that roofs are only fixed in a few locations but stuck mainly with tiger seal?

Sorry cant help further, but by the end of the summer I should be an expert, let me know how you get on.

Spent ages (with much assistance and head sratching from smiffyluvsdubs !) trying to trace two leaks in rear corners of ours - convinced it was gutters, then convinced it was tailgate seal, then convinced it was getting though rivets along the section behind the top of the tailgate... everything done to seal in those places failed when it rained again...
Nattering to brother in law who runs commercials and plant hire and he said he'd had a problem with capillary action pulling water up and round the cab on one of his trucks - he had a look at the van and found the problem straight away! Where high top joins the van above the tailgate looked flush, but turned out sealant was cracked and had gaps - sorted and re-sealed, and no more leaks!

It may not be where yours is getting water in, but worth checking in case... good luck!
OK so I'm not so new anymore, but still a slack poster - where does the time go?!

Thought mine was leaking at the tailgate seal but was actually at one of the press stud rivets at top left corner. I have a few cracks in the hightop sealant too - a few rust stains along the gutter that I'll need to sort out soon. The worst spot however is just above the windscreen on the right hand side.
