intermittent oil light flashing

Post by dirtygertie »

Now that the oil leak has been sorted on my van (2l Aircooled (no Idea of letters)), I've noticed that I'm still getting the oil light come on during long journey's. it only happens when I slow down and drop revs it flickers on and off, if I rev the engine the light goes off again. There's nothing wrong with the oil level.

could this be something to do with the oil pump? if so, is this a biggie to change?

What oil are you using? 15w40 as a min and I'd suggest a 20w50 will be better on an older engine.. But its not going to fix a tired engine..

WHen the oil gets hot, it gets thinner and thinner.. so...
Do you have all the tinware in place and the engine bay seal? ie: no "holes" from the top side of the engine to the underside..

The oil cooler could be quite dirty and not letting air through it to cool the oil....

as the push rod seals have just been changed I bought the 'classic car' oil from Halfords, he's checked that everythings on ok although we do still have a slight leak from somewhere (not obvious where though)

I'll get 'da bloke' to check the oil cooler when I get back from bustypes, thanks :ok

Dont drive it. I had and still have the same problem and had to get a new head fitted becuase the oil got so thin that the van overheated.

It could be a partially blocked oil cooler
timing not set correctly
missing tinware
Holes letting hot air in to the cold zone
Oil pressure realse valve problems

Basically I think that my van overheated and made the oil thin and therefore a reduction in oil pressure - hence the light flickering at idle

Your problem sounds the same and could be related to overheating.

Im no expert but with all the problems I have had with my van I will be soon :D
