warning lights

Post by tomsneade »

Hi, Ive just got a vw t25 transporter diesel 1600 1985 .The facia lights dont work!.The blue warning light is ON even though i am on dip, and goes OFF when i am on FULL beam! The battery light stays on for a good 30 or 40 secs after the engine has started! The temp warning light is constantly ON (but no overheating problems) and the speedometer is very "jumpy". Could they all be connected to ONE particular fault or individual causes? Many thanks for any suggestions.Tom.

this is a difficult one to give advice on as the circuits that you are having problems with are all independent of each other. The multiconnector at the rear of the dash is well known for causing many problems, particularly the copper tracks onto which the connector slides onto. Check these by removing the connector and inspecting the condition of the exposed copper tracks.

The speedo 'jitters' could be simply due to a poor fit of the speedo cable at the rear of the speedo but it could be the cable itself, the fitting at the front wheel where it picks up the drive or even the speedo itself.

The main beam warning light is fed via a fuse from the cable that supplies the main beam headlight so this could be due to some sort of change or attempted mod of the wiring, flasher stalk, etc.

Panels lights anything from blown bulbs, open circuit track on the membrane pcb, faulty dimmer switch, blown fuse, etc.

the Alternator warning light being slow to extinguish could be due to worn brushes, heavily discharged battery, slack belt, etc, etc. Even new brush packs can show this symptom so, once agin a tough one to advise on.

Temp coolant LED being on all the time is either low coolant or usually traced to a faulty earth or poor connection in the water coolant level sender circuit.

Your best course of action is to concentrate on one problem at a time but you will need the wiring diagram for your van. 1985 saw the introduction of the later dash assemblies, and these were revised again in 1986. A change of dash to a pre 85 type requires modifications to the wiring connector at the dashboard and it might be worth checking the multiconnector colour code and sequence just to confirm that the dash is the correct one for your van.
