Timing

Why is my test light permantly on?, well almost permantly on when its attached to the coil and the body of the van. When I say permantly on I mean that when I rotate the dizzy the light dims in a certain spot and then brightens again. I cant seem to get it go of alltogether, which I am assuming is the same as getting it to come on but I have wired up the test light wrong somehow.

Also and here is the knob question - I have set my crank at 6 degs BTDC for the static setting

I assume this is to the left of the "0" on the scale (counterclockwise)?

Test lamp will be permanently on when connected. The spark only occurs when the power is removed from the coil. The rest (between sparks) is known as the dwell angle but more commonly associated to points ignition. Electronic ignition keeps the power on to the coil until a spark is needed. At this point the power is broken and you get your spark.

And yes... To the left.

Is the points in the dizzy actually opening and closing ???

It's electronically controlled. Too quick for a mere filament lamp to register any change. Shouldn't really be dipping at all to be honest!

Oh thats makes more sense, having a scooby engine and being a heavy diesel mechanic kind of forget little things like that!
