2.0ltr A/C non-starter!!

Post by nedkelly113 »

Hi
Wonder if anyone can help.
I have an '81 A/C with a CJ engine. A while ago it wouldn't start and had to get the AA out. Bloke had it started in seconds and told me the carb was flooded. He also showed me how to cure the problem. Full throttle, turn over and slowly let the pedal out. Worked a treat once, now i cant get it started again but this isn't working. Theres fuel in it, leads are good etc. Is there a way i can get the fuel out the carb so i can get it started?? Cant bump it as its parked nose down in a parking space.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Ned

It's not the carb thats flooded. The engine ie. the cylinders could be though. If this is the case then put foot to floor on accellerator pedal, keep it there (thats important!) and turn the engine over until it starts. If the battery is good and flooding is your problem then this will start it. If there's a different problem though... It may not!

Hi Mark
Just tried that but without success. Battery is starting to die now so i had to stop.
Might leave it till tomorrow now and get stuck right into it. How do i go about proving that its flooded? I'll try the spark plugs/leads to prove thier working tomorrow when i have time but they are all relatively new.
Any ideas what could cause this problem??????

Thanks
Ned

Just noticed... You parked nose down. Could be exact opposite of what you think! The fuel may have run back through the fuel lines and there is now no fuel getting to the carb!
Try tipping a little fuel down the carb to see if that fires it into life. If it doesn't then I would suspect an electrical problem but I'm pretty sure the engines not flooded.

Is fuel going down the chokes in the carbs? Does the tailpipe smell of petrol?? If not.. then I would say the fuel has run back to the tank and the pump is either weak/not working or not able to pick the fuel up in the tank (low fuel level???)

Thanks for the advice everyone.
Batteries back on charge now so it'll be tomorrow before i do anything else.
Dont know if it makes any difference but its got a single weber carb. do i just pour a little fuel through the open air filter (pancake filter)?
Thanks

Take filter off so top of carb is visable (or take off top cover if pancake filter will allow) and pour a tablespoon of fuel down through the centre of the carb.

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!!
Got wired into it tonight when i got home.
First i put a little bit more petrol in the the tank just in case! (there wasn't a huge amount in) Then i toke the cover off the pancake filter and poured a little petrol into the carb, turned it over and it fired straight away, then died! So i figured the fuel wasn't getting there and poured a little bit more in and tried again, again it fired, revved hard and died. Thought i'd give it another go with a bit more fuel to give the pump a chance and see what happens. Turned it over with the lid off the air filter and it coughed, spluttered and banged to life, sending the kids running for cover!!!! Took her for a good run to blow the cobwebs out and all is well!! Think it was a combination of low fuel, parked nose down and sitting for a week and a half.
Thanks for all the help.

Hi Rich
Where did you get the n/r valve? Is it just a bog standard one from gsf or the likes?
Good idea that. save me a few problems in the future i think.
Cheers
