Warm-up or not prior to oil change?

Post by JCL »

Engine and gearbox oil change tomorrow (was planning to do it today but my new Halfwits trolley jack wasnt upto the job!!). I understand from experience with cars that the oil thins and flows better when warm but what im more concerned about is loosening of the plugs and fillers.. warm or cold for ease of loosening and reducing the chances of threading???
Thanks.

Definately take it out for a short run first.
Fit a new copper sump bung washer.
Put a smear of new oil on the oil filter seal (hand tight only)
Run up with approx 3.5litres of 15W 40 mineral oil, stop engine and top up to max level.

Gearbox oil 3.5 litres 75W-90 GL4

I like to do a ten mile drive followed by a Wynns engine flush (that then requires fifteen minutes of fast idle) before changing the oil. It flows like water out of the sump so thick gloves and long sleeves are a must, although by the time ALL the oil is out the filter is usually cool enough to handle.
