Got her home looks like its the glow plugs
the relay that controls them or an air leak

how easy are the glow plugs to replace ? according to the recovery chap easy and they just screw in
is that correct ?

Not too familiar with these diesel engines but I understand they may not be quite as easy as you have been told!
Just going on what I have seen in other posts but I understand some of them can be a bit a bit of a pain to get to.

Hi me again
van still wont start i have changed 3 of the glow plugs just carnt get to the middle one under the pump
the recovery man last night squirted plenty of plus gas down the air filter and after a bit it fired and ran ok
i would of thought that if it fired with plus gas there must be heat on the glow plugs and even with only 3 glow plugs running i would think it would fire
the other thing i noticed is that one of the injectors is wet with diesel looks like its the run off pipes are leaking is it possible that air is getting into the fuel lines and disrupting the fuel flow ?

thanks John

It wont be plus gas that's a penetrating oil it would be start pilot or easy start, it will fire on that stuff with out any heater plug!Have you tested the glow plug circuit ??? they may be new but are they working? I would stop all leaks and bleed it through then try!

Hi sucess she is alive yipee :D
my son who used to be a diesel mechanic came over to help me
changed the run off pipes and also the return fuel pipe was leeking at the pump end so we cut the pipe and put a new jubilee clip on, it took some turning over and the air bleeding but fired up ok
the next big test is if she starts in the morning which would fingers crossed prove that there is no more air leaks

Hi mate,
remember reading something about the cold start lever in a diesel - looks like a choke thing that you pull out - advances the timing and makes it easier to start when its cold.

But they did comment that it is easier to pull out when engne warm...so if you leaving a while, pull it out just as you stop the engine.

search cold start lever

hi em
thanks for your reply
i also read about this too but unfortunately the cable is connected at the engine but there is no button on the dash and the cable is cut off in the engine bay so at the moment i can not do anything about this
its a mystery to me why anyone would want to do this.
also i have no temperature gauge reading and i have found the reason for that too no cable connected to the sensor again why someone would want to disconnect this is a mystery to me
the warning light on the temperature gauge is working it flashes a few times when the key is turned and then goes off and remains off when is running
i am having this looked at on saturday as its betong my capabilities
