Looking for a S/S Early Exhaust 1.9DG

Post by Cruz »

I'm weighing up and pricing up a replacement early exhaust system from Bluebird or VWspeedshop to be fitted in October (a long time off I know but cash needs to be saved and usually there's an 8 week lead time on ordering)

However being a numbskull I'm unsure as to which is the one I would need as they don't look like the original

http://www.vwspeedshop.com/home.php?cat=476" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Can anyone shed a light in my empty head?

Right, interested in this topic too...although will need mine a little quicker

I am running the 2.1 with a carb. Will I need to reduce the size of the oil filter, and if so, is that ok?

Or you could use the Turbo Thomas early pipes that are replica's of the original system.. then choose a rear box..

You can fit the late system to your van, but need a late engine carrier bracket (the alloy part) as it has mounts on it for the silencer..

Not keen on the smaller oil filter idea.. But as long as you change it regular it ought to be fine.. (apparently its a polo one.. )

ahhh - see that is how numpty I am.....didn't realise the systems were different. Mine is a 1990...so guessing late.

engine is recon - a change from 1.9 to 2.1, but bus is g reg 1990, and original exhaust was used at engine change. So I need late, yeah?

Anyone running with the smaller filter?

I've got a VW speedshop one on my van (also early) you don't need to use a short filter as it's only needed on the later vans with an oil cooler. Fit and finish was very good, I did need to slightly clearance the ns tinware by about 6mm to clear the rear J tube but my tinware was quite twisted so it could have been that. Sounds nice, louder than stock but not oppressive (unless your on full throttle :D )

If your pipework is good, consider the mod I suggested in the WIKI under exhausts, using a Kawasaki can. I think Kevtherev is doing the same. It works for those with the earlier exhaust system on a 1.9DG.

Personally i would get the Turbo Thomas stainless system for about £180- then you can fit an original rear silencer. Tim

Still weighing up which one to go for in the bluebird or speedshop system

What confuses me is the look of each system on the websites. They look totally different but are both supposed to fit an early van

VW Speedshop System

Do they look different because the speedshop system is a universal system? Would it need any extra support to fit on an early van?
