All EU campsites offering EHU must have the appropriate safety cert for their EHU points. Common sense dictates that there will be occaisions when vans are connected to a non certificated supply, i.e garage at home, so safety devices need to be in the van. For those reading these posts and not sure of what an RCD is (or does) here is an example of the sort of information available. In my installation the Supply is the hook -up and this not deemed as 'permanent', the double pole RCD is integral to the twin sockets and thus isolates both feeds to any devices connected to the socket in the event of a fault. If for any reason I need to work on the electrical installation.....I remove the EHU lead.

Going slightly of track... Heres a question for the electrickery minded among you. According to to 17th edition you must earth bond the body of the vehicle... Fair enough, Its been written by people who know much more about it than me so I will follow accordingly. But... will this have any effect on the 12v system or vice versa if you use both at the same time. e.g watching telly with the leisure battery lights on? I've asked a couple of sparkys at work and got a frown and a scratch of the chin with "Hmmm, good question I'll have to have a think about it."

P.s. I will be be following the regs to the letter and getting a mate of mine to run all the appropriate tests once I'm finished.

....no effect if it is earthed correctly with a common mains earth point/bus. Van chassis should be earthed to this using correctly coded earth wire or sleeve. I keep the earth connection as short as possible and secure to a pillar or body section (free of paint) using a 8 -10mm soldered Eyelet tag with M10 or M8 nut/bolt/serrated washers, etc. Test RCD using the test function button or switch, other tests as described by Trebor require specialist equipment but your having the installation tested anyway.

You're right to press the test button regulary Angelo - quartly in fact. But remember, this only tests the operation of the device not the tripping time or current. These devices have been known to fail & only appropriate tests will prove their effectiveness.
