Hi guys

As Kev says, no, it's a bit fiddly.
However, if all else fails you might have to ( I did on mine a couple of years ago )
It IS quite easy to get the starter off. ( disconnect the battery before going near it !!!! ) so you can then look at the bush with a small torch, and feel it with your finger, to see if it is badly worn.
If you decide it has to be replaced, there is an article in our wiki here - https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Pe ... sh_removal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that tells you all about it.
p.s. = Don't attempt to test the starter off the vehicle, without the shaft being supported by that bellhousing bearing, it will damage it.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

What colour smoke. ?
(black is less of a worry, grey or blue could be bad news.)
Does it do it when you rev up a bit when stationary, or mostly when driving.
If driving, does it do it most when :-
A - Accelerating
B - Slowing down
C - All the time
btw, was it smoking when you posted this =

Re: Newbie with a few problems
I suppose the only problem here is = It will fail it's MOT if it is smoking
Chicken and egg really, as you can't take it for a drive to see if it clears without an MOT, though, hopefully it will clear on the way to the MOT station.
I'm not very experienced with Aircooled's, but was wondering :-
I suppose (and hope) that just running it on the driveway with the timing out couldn't have damaged a piston (could it ?) - (I know it can if you drive it with the timing way out, same as with any engine)
