2.0 A/C what goes where?
ok, in my quest to fix my engine idling issue, I started by looking at the engine bay and working out what was what. What I found was very interesting...
1:The Brake Servo vacuum hose. This has been modified with garden hose and jubilee clips? It has a three way tube attached with one tube not attached to anything. about 1cm away is a small piece of pipe emerging from outside the engine bay that is marked as if something was recently attached. However, these pieces do not attach easily. Should they be attached?
2: the Idle stabilising unit, This is missing. You can see markings in the dirt where it was, and broken screw brackets, but there is no unit. The connecters are connected together. This was my first port of call to examine my idling problem, so I was a little disappointed to find this missing!
3: air filter box. two tubes emerge from the front of the filter box (possibly temp regulator?) One tube goes to the vacuum unit next to the air box, one goes some where else and one end of the three way split goes nowhere? However, there is an identical looking tube attached to the vacuum unit at the bottom of the distributer that is not attached to anything else?
4: weird cable with cap? at the front of the engine bay is a cable with a three pronged plug on the end, this is covered with a rubber cap. can't work out where the other end goes beyond "into the engine" any ideas!
Thanks all, I hope to get to the bottom of this (and hope some of this solves my weird idling problem!) I have pics but they are taking ages to transfer onto my computer, I can post if needs be.

no 4 is the old vw plug for the diagnostic machine
no 3 one goes to the dizzy one goes to the left hand carb the third goes to the round bit on the air intake pipe
no 2 is fine as is, most isu are fooked by now, running like this is fine
no 1 here is your problem the hose should be of correct type and connect to both inlet manifolds and then to the servo valve

nice one, in the time its taken me to upload the pictures to photo bucket and then look up how to post them on here, you've answered all my questions! would any of those explain the massive over revving at start up, followed by cutting out as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator once warm problem, google suggests this is a problem caused by bypassing the ISU? I've found a new one for $80 but I'd prefer to spend the money on beer.

Yup - number 1 - the hose to the servo vacuum not being attached would cause a massive vacuum leak. This would cause the engine to cut out at idle.

That pic might be some help, from when i had it. The idle stab unit went up the swanny, its not a problem to run without it.
