REALLY horrible sound!

Post by orcades »

There seems to be a VERY horrible sound coming from underneath the drivers seat when I drive my Transporter. It doesnt happen everytime and it only happens when I accelerate. It sounds 'shaft' like but there is nothing obvious. It speeds up when I speed up and it is a very loud banging sound. Sometime, if I keep going it will peak and then make a sound like something has snapped off and all goes quiet, soon though it will start again. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hey. Yeah. Had a look for obvious stuff and nothing leapt out at me. Had a mechanic friend round and like a true flirt, the old girl acted like she was running beautifully! Typical, but as soon I a did some serious accelerating up a hill this morning, BANG BANG BANG!
When I turn the wheel there is no sound at all.

where abouts in the world might you be??

Sure its coming from under your seat? could be a CV joint.. could be anything.. get under it and see if there is anything loose or broken or trapped.. jack up the front and rock the wheel top and bottom (tiny amount of play can be felt), spin it as suggested.. then go the back and grab hold of the drive shaft and wriggle it in out up down.. stick you hand in the rear swing arms and check the CV bolts are not loose...(you can see the ones on the gearbox easy)
