Newbie with a few problems

Hi guys
I have just got a 1982 Aircooled 2litre t25 off eBay that needs a bit of fettling to say the least
firstly I replaced the plugs,leads,disi cap and rota arm due to it running rough and it was struggling to turn over although I put a new battery on it,a mate said it could be the timing so I had a go myself with a timing light and it read 40 degrees on the light thingy according to the book it should be 5 to 7btdc I think I may have taken the disi out and put it back wrong as it won't now start?any ideas.
Also I have a problem with my accelerator pedal arrangement it looks like a dodgy chippie knocked it up with an old wardrobe hinge.also there is a big rusty hole where the push rod goes through the floor,can I replace the floor panel and put a new pedal and linkage in if so how?
Sorry for babbling on but I have so much to do before I can hit them slow lanes on our little camping trips

To get your engine sorted, you ideally need someone local as diagnosing a 'no-run' problem from afar can be almost impossible. Join a loval VW club - that will help you no end. Updating your profile to show where you're located is essential on here if you need hands-on help. As for pedal, you just need to find a local guy/lass that can weld. Its a fairly simple area to repair really.

And thanks for keeping another 2lt Aircooled on the road!

Have a look in the wiki - there is a picture of the 2lt engine...and it shows you how the leads and dizzi *should* look - but beware, some can be 180 degrees out. Did you pull the dizzy right out, or just remove the leads and cap?
Anyways, have a look at the picture.

As the gent above says, put your location in...you might be just round the corner from another one!!

Thanks for the reply guys i attempted to have a go at the timing today spent a good hour or so turning the disi back and forth ligning up the tdc markers on the pulley wheel and staring at my haynes manual like a zombie i ended up ringing a mobile mechanic who is coming out on thursday to have a look,fingers crossed he can sort it.
Thanks covkid i had a look on the link you left on ems post and found some pics of the accelerator fixing and i will attempt a repair as soon as the van is running ok.thanks guys

Mark - did you check the arrangement of the leads?

firing order 1-4-3-2....basically, if the dissy is in the correct position (not 180 degrees out) the leads on the right hand side as you look at it should cross. they are Cylinders 1 and 2. The ones going to the left (nos. 3 and 4) don't cross. It is the cross that gives you that 1-4-3-2 order. If they all run straight its sending the spark 1 2 3 4 and it won't be very happy at all!!

and as you say she did run untill i started to experiment.I dont mind getting my hands dirty so its the best way to learn(i told myself)

If the leads are in the right order it should be easy to set up, pop dizzy cap off, remove rotor arm and plastic cover, refit rotor arm, should be a mark on body of dizzy and mark on tip of rotor arm, wind engine round until you have notch in pulley pointing to 0 degrees or just before, adjust dizzy body so 2 marks line up, put back together, place #1 lead where the rotor arm should now be TDC #1 and fire her up, adjust timing to correct setting using timing light and by turning dizzy body slightly. if it don't start or backfires, take #1 lead off and place #4 lead there and do the correct firing order from that.

Good to see another T25 on the Wirral, if you can get to Wallasey theres a place called Volkswirral (Ithink) off Mannor rd. I used to take my Bug there its mainly Aircooled stuff they service, Gasure is your best bet though I always take my camper to Steve top man

Hi guys I found a great vw mechanic he's gonna sort out my timing issue and anything else that needs doing he's worked on vwt25's for 20 years so knows what he's doing hopefully
