No brakes

Just been out in the van 5 mins into driving i pressed my break and it was solid i i couldnt stop. It eventually sorted itself out and went back to normal. I have newish disks and pads. does the system have air in and need bleeding or is it my servo. Cheers Steve

sounds servo related! defo not air the pedal would go down not become stiff... did you have the handbrake on whilst driving?

And is your brake servo hose in good nick ?
It runs from the inlet manifold to the servo and is a special type of hose.
The symptoms are the same as when trying to use your brakes when the engine has been switched off for a while (like when coasting down a long hill - though you aren't supposed to do that by law of course !)

I think you press the pedal, then switch the engine on. The pedal should depress slightly as the servo goes into action. If not check the pipe for a vacuum at the servo end.

If this is the problem you should still be able to stop just as well by pressing hard though!

Ive done the pedal test and turn the ignition on and the pedal didnt go down so i pulled the none return valve pipe off from the vac pump and i couldnt blow or suck down it. Took it for a spin round the block breaks worked fine again. Sucked and blew down the pipe again and i could suck again. I have done this three times now and two occasions the valve has note done what its supposed to do so this indicates to me that the valve is blocked or the diaphragm is knackered. My mechanic mate agrees with me too. I will replace this first and see what happens.

First thing to do is remove the servo pipe from the vacuum pump and see if you have vacuum with a cold engine.
This will tell you if it's the vacuum or oil pump.

If thats ok then does it hold vacuum overnight?
The easiest way to tell is to remove the pipe from the vacuum pump if it's holding pressure you will hear a woosh of air.
If it's holding pressure overnight you can be sure its not a leak in the pipework or the one way valve(located in the top of the vacuum pump).

total hijacking of this thread but i have exactly the same issue - and the servo hose looks in good nick at the servo end (although i havent been under the van). i have a turbo diesel.

could anyone confirm where i am looking for the oil pump/vacuum hose in the engine bay? piccies here to help


is this the hose entering the oil pump?


is this the non return valve?
