Aircooled WHITE SMOKE PROBLEM

Post by Becsteer »

HI I WAS HOPING THAT SOMEONE MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME.

I'VE JUST FITTED A PAIR OF NEW ICT34 WEBBER CARBS AND MANIFOLDS WITH PANCAKE AIR FILTERS.

THE VAN I HAVE IS A 1981 T25 AIR-COOLED WITH A 2.0L CU ENGINE. I BOUGHT IT LAST SUMMER AND STRIPPED IT OUT AND SORTED ALL THE WELDING THAT WAS NEEDED AND SORTED THE OIL LEAK WHICH MEANT REPLACING ALL THE OIL SEALS AS WELL AS REPLACING THE FUEL LINES + FILTER, ACCELERATOR AND CLUTCH CABLES. THEN IT WAS TIME TO GET THOUGH THE MOT IT FAILED 1ST TIME ON THE EMISSIONS SO I TOOK IT DOWN TO A VW DEALER WHO CURSED AND SHOOK HIS HEAD AT SEEING A AIR-COOLED T25 AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.

AFTER IT SPENT A DAY WITH HIM HE HAD A LIST WHICH NEEDED SORTING WHICH INCLUDED NO GASKETS ON THE INLET MANIFOLDS AS WELL AS THEM BEEN POROUS, NO CLIP ON THE AIR FILTER TO HOLD IT DOWN HENCE RANDOM BOUTS OF AIR LEAKING IN, THE WRONG TYPE OF DISTRIBUTOR FITTED (1.6L), THE SOLEX CARBS WERE STUCK ON CHOKE AND THE ELECTRONICS DID'NT WORK. SO TO PASS THE MOT HE SET THE CARBS UP TO RUN LEAN AND IT PAST BUT BACK FIRED AND RAN LIKE A BAG OF SPANNERS FOR A BETTER WORD.

SO AFTER I REPLACED THE DISTRIBUTOR FOR A CENTRAL FUSELAGE 009 UNIT, SPARK PLUGS, LEADS, COIL, CARBS AND MANIFOLDS FOR WEBBER'S IT WAS TIME TO TAKE IT FOR A RUN AS IT WAS TICKING OVER OK AND HOLDING ITS OWN. I TOOK IT FOR A FIVE MILE RUN AND RETURNED HOME OK THE ONLY THING WAS THE TICK OVER WAS RUNNING A BIT HIGH NOW IT WAS WARM. SO I ADJUSTED IT VIA THE TIMING SCREW ON EACH CARB AT WHICH POINT A NOW HAVE PURE WHITE SMOKE AT TICK OVER AND THROUGH OUT THE REV RANGE AND YES IT WAS THE TIMING SCREW NOT THE MIXTURE SCREW AS I WAS CONVINCED I TURNED THE WRONG ONE AT FIRST.

HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS?

I'M SORRY FOR THE HISTORY BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER TO KNOW WHAT HAD GONE ON PREVIOUSLY SO THAT YOU WERN'T MISLED.

MANY THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READING THIS

its mixture, its overfuelling. or a needle valve is stuck open in the float..
get it to a rolling road sharpish or you will do some proper damage

What would you advise for a replacement as I was told the 009 would be ok. Thanks for your advise so far.

get a stock set up with a proper coil (giving proper sparks)too

try billy 739 off here or spannerboy for the bits.

you really really need to get it on a rolling road or perhaps steve at http://www.gasure.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; can help.

dont drive it like this you will kill it

no such thing as a timing screw on the carbs!

screw the mixture screw all the way in , the engine should not run or there is a problem with the carbs!

as stated above 009 is for beetles/ 12-1600 bay windows! t25 only came with electronic ignition, so fit this back on .

Hi an update on the white smoke I found the engine breather pipe blocked so of cause unblocked it and took her out again on the same run as last time and I'm glad to say no white smoke this time. Adjusted the tick over as she was running a bit high once warmed up. So now I'm going to book her into a rolling road to get her set up properly. All that's left now is the inside to have a full fit out, the heater cables to replace as she stuck on full heat and I'm tempted to try the roll on paint job if I get chance.

Things are looking better!

Many thanks for your advise Rob :ok
