VW T25 Fuel leak. Carb?????????????

Post by hemanpaul »

Hello i need some advice on an fuel leak on a t25

I brought an 1984 a reg 1.9 petrol watercooled t25 about an month ago of an 80 yr old chap who had it for 22 years.

Ive noticed since i brought it theres been an an strong petrol smell but didnt really think much of it i checked underneath just to make sure it wasnt leaking petrol it had a new fuel tank in 2001 so it looked good and the pipes

When ive been out in the van and park up and then come back to it, it really smells of petrol. When ive been out and come back and parked it on the drive it smells of petrol and even a couple of hours later its still smelling of petrol. After an few hours the smell dies down abit. The other day i started it up and let it tick over for about 20 mins then turned it off and it really stank of petrol i was getting high of the fumes lol. I lifted the engine cover off and was smelling for petrol and noticed that the carb and airbox has a bit off petrol around it and the smell is strong so the smell is coming from there i know its the carb and is pose to smell of petrol but it really stinks. i havent touched anything yet just want to get some advice before i do. And i put £20 pounds worth of petrol and only went out init about 4 times and did 54 miles and tank was nearly empty lol firstyyyyyyyyyyyyy

The engine runs sweet as a nut it doesnt miss a beat sounds really smooth. The choke comes on when started for a minute or less so thats working well. Theres no smoke coming out of the exuast.

I been looking around the forums and theres not much info on the watercooled vans. Only the older types Aircooled, been reading about there carb problems and they say its the spindles that need doing.

i have posted some photos of the carb

Thanks for reading and any help would be greatfull

Hi, if you are loosing a lot of fuel you really need to see if you can find a leak. Have a good look at the expansion tanks and fuel filler pipe these are quite common faults.

It won't be leaking fuel from the seal you've shown.
Could be those old braided fuel hoses.
Sometimes the seal in the fuel pump can let fuel back into the engine so it worth checking the oil.

try a can of carb cleaner first and that will remove the tar build up giving you a chance of seeing where it leaks first. (dont do this with engine running)
short pipe between pump and carb can be removed and block one end and blow down other.will soon find holes if they are there. other pipe is return to tank so not really under any pressure.
hope this helps

Hi there - welcome to here where you will find all you need to know ( and lots you don't  )

I am surprised that no one has said this yet =

Don't use it till you've fixed it - for flip sake !

These vans are well known for bursting into flames in the engine bay !!

There have been many sad tales and photo's.
It's to do with 25 year old tubing coupled with the layout of the engine bay and exhaust etc.

Hello again

thanks for the replys/ The last 2 replys have scared me now and watching the youtube vids lol

I had a good look and the pipes and clean the carb again this afternoon. I took the air box thing off the carb and clean inside the carb and around it. I run the engine for a while and looking for leaks from pipes but couldnt see any but i was only looking for a minute as it started hammering down with rain. All i noticed was that rubber band between the carb and airbox was split but i guess that wouldnt be the problem. I also had a good smell of the oil dipstick and noticed a petrol tang to it, also smelt the oil filler cap and that had an petrol smell to it aswell.

hopefully it will be dry tomoz afternoon so i can investigate further

going to try and put a photo album on here of the van

thanks

sounds like float needle sticking and flooding out mate. might be worth grabbing a service kit and whipping the carb off.give it all a good clean out , if it aint been done in 30yrs you may well be in for a shock

take the braided hose to GSF Halfords or any motor factor and they will stock fuel line.
The line may well not look the same as we've moved on ... but it will be OK, certainly better than the death by burning that you have at the moment

And check all the other fuel lines too.
We hate losing members or their vans due to fires !!

btw, don't use "Jubilee" clips on those pipes, get some of the proper fuel pipe clips (they don't distort the thin tubing the way Jubilee clips often do)

:ok
