To the Alps & Back by Syncro REPORT COMPLETE

Post by SyncroSwede »

Rolled in at 0500 today from a ski trip to Pelvoux in the the Alps.
The huge amount of road miles on the peages may seem dull but a few electro/mechanical issues on the way down
and an interesting hour or two on the way back out of the mountains
may make this a worthy post!

All I can say is...glad I had a Syncro :ok

Here's the route out and most of the way back from a GPS trace to whet your appetite...

Right, ready now and photos uploaded.

I never intended to write a report on this trip as it was to be a rather prosaic trek to the Alps for some skiing so the photos don't start until later.

The reason I chose to drive was twofold. First, my Mum, (a French speaker) was owed a favour which came in the form of free use of an apartment in Pelvoux for this particular week and second, my girlfriend and I have a friend in Essex who also skis. So, four up in the multivan/camper Syncro would share the epic fuel costs which would also be offset by the free apartment. In addition to this we wouldn't have to mess about with limited luggage on a plane and an uncomfortable coach transfer and we could also take sufficient food to self-cater and avoid the Alpine eating out costs which is comparable to the Syncro's thirst!

So here's the beast outside out place in Devon:
Image
Here's where I was to spend so much time... if only I knew!
Image

As you can see from the GPS track, we went via Melksham in Wiltshire to collect my Mum and Rob (who'd come down by train). We had an 0700 ferry booking from Dover so left Wilts at 0230  making Dover for 0600 easily. Shame the same couldn't be said of the ferry

LD Lines were about half the price of P&O or Norfolk Lines etc and this seems to be for a very good reason too. The ferry was broken and the next was at 1245. We got a refund for the outward journey and switched to Norfolk Lines for an extra £40 on the 0800 ferry. Onwards....

By this time there was a disturbing drone/whine from the front end somewhere but we were committed by now. Fingers crossed...

The French peage autoroutes are amazing. Smooth with nice toilet/picnic stops every 15-20km but expensive petrol (cheaper diesel though). Petrol costs 1.4-1.5 euros per litre on the main roads but 1.35 euros in the the towns and supermarkets. Chris and I shared the driving and all was good but for the whine! The worry got the better of me so I stopped and jacked up the front wheels to feel for play but all was smooth. As time went on I came to the conclusion it was the front differential as the noise changed when in four wheel drive compared to rear wheels only. Anyway, nothing was feeling too bad so onwards!

So after 1275 km of driving at about midnight or so we've just passed Grenoble and find a 24 hour automatic fuel station at a good price so fill up for the last 150 km. I go to drive off the forecourt to find I have no headlights

The switch seems to be at fault so the dash pod comes apart and the multi meter comes out. Glad I had the toolbox/spares kit on board by now. I am tired so my diagnosing skills are poor but all I can find is that the sidelight circuits are fine, the main beams are fine but the dipped headlights won't come on. A wire from the switch's live input to the fuse gives me permanent headlights but main beam won't lock on, flash only. Oh well, onwards...

We roll in to Pelvoux and eventually find the place at 0400. You try steering up a mountain hairpin bend, holding main beam on with the left hand and changing gear with the right hand! So glad I had a patient crew on board...

No apologies for the rubbish picture, I was toast!

Apart from the whine and the headlight switch the van was amazing. The front and rear seats (multivan bench) were really comfortable, loads of legroom and with fridge facilities on board, refreshments were plentiful too.

The 2.1 litre wbx was fantastic. It purrs along at 60-70 mph with hardly any sound, it used no oil and a cupful of coolant (which I know drips from the water pump housing whether running or not). It was about 1500 km there (940 miles) and I can honestly say it was too much in one go. I can't even say one day as it was over 24 hours! Still, we made it and got skiing.

Chris and Rob on the piste:

Launch of a ski/paraglider tandem:

I rarely take piste pictures as they are generally crap and I don't carry a proper camera (camera phone only) as falling on a large lump often hurts! Four solid days of skiing with relaxing lunches in the van, eber heater on if a bit damp/chilly, bacon and mushroom baguettes and fresh coffee for pennies not 15 euros! My Mum, (who's 60 this year) decided it was time she learned to ski, she's great!

During the week I got out the Bentley's and checked the wiring diagrams and fixed a wire in place so that the working sidelight switch also put on the headlights with the bonus that the main beam switch locked on as normal.

We discussed the return journey and decided to split it in two to make the 1700 ferry back from Boulogne. The last day was wet so we left at midday Friday. As we climbed up out of the valley past Briancon the rain turned to sleet, then snow. Then we saw a sign stating that one of the two cols out of the Apls to the west was closed but ours was ok... apparently!

I then started to see all the cars coming the other way plastered in snow and ice and running snow chains. One by one the cars going our way stopped to chain up as the snow on the road thickened. Decoupler was coupled and the windscreen started to ice up. With max heat on the screen alone the ice would melt but the wiper rubbers were solid. I was following a chained up Belgian Mercedes A class at a distance of about 20 metres when it just vanished  , then the road side poles went too   ! Proper blizzard this... Eventually, after judicious use of the rear diff lock we began to descend. I managed to prise my hands off the wheel and start breathing again.

The main beam driving lamps had 1 cm of solid ice and the snow on the grill wasn't, it too was solid ice!

The driving got easier and the scenery epic so here's a few pictures heading down the mountains:

Down on the valley bottom near Grenoble there was this view of some amazing rock formations:

So another fill at the cheap but infamous headlight failure fuel station and onwards to Troyes for the night.

Across France is a range of cheap and cheerful motel types places. Formula 1, Etap and B&B to name a few. B&B came recommended so we just turned up at one at 2100 in the industrial area on the outskirts of Troyes where a family room was 60 euros with an extra 24 euros for breakfast. There was a Harvester type restaurant across the road, which was relatively cheap but still 70 odd euros for 4 dinners and beers! You can see why we went self catering. The room itself had a double bed and two singles on a mezzanine level above the bathroom. Perfectly adequate for four adults and pretty cheap too. The breakfast was bacon, eggs, toast, cereal, juice and coffee etc and eat as much as you could get down, so I did! Kept me going to Boulogne that breakfast did :D

We had the time to loaf around Reims for an hour and a half, which was nice...

Then there was LD Lines again  The 1700 ferry was delayed to 1930. 1.5 hours across then an hour to get from outside the harbour wall at Dover to getting off the damned thing. Then on to Basildon to drop Rob off via the A2, which was closed. Shame they didn't tell you this until 10 minutes outside Dover and committed to the route, hence the winding route along the picturesque north Kent coast!

Then to Wiltshire down the roadworks infested M4 then home at 0500

So, in summary then:
Distance 1950 miles
Petrol £555
Peage £97
Ferry £107
Food (eating in) £161 (7 days worth)
Food (eating out) £85 (1 days worth)
Ski hire & lift pass each for 4 days £118

Total(ish) for four people for the whole shebang £1500

I was getting 21 - 23 mpg out of the van, which for an 2.1 mv/dj hybrid seems to be the going rate but worth it for the pleasure of the drive.

Would I do it again?

:ok of course, even if the apartment wasn't free. Syncros rock :shady :shady

Nice write up Mal.

940 miles in one hit is just insane!!! Most i have ever done in a day is 760 in a Scirocco, and 800ish on a Kawasaki GT750. Now that was torture. (but I was 21yrs old)

heh, we did Chamonix to Fleet services in 10 hours (675 miles)
Very similar route, Troyes, Reims etc. used the tunnel though
Done it once the back way, no Peage at all, next time we went we though "sod that" and just paid the Peage.
We just slept at petrol station car parks, didn't get an hassle, no way we were leaving the van unattended either!
We can a couple of "incidents" also, mainly due to water in the fuel (condensation I presume from living in the cold them coming down to warmer climes) drained the water from the agglomerator on the fuel filter and off we went again.
mTDI though, cost next to nothing, cheap day returns on the tunnel and just didn't go back, I seem to remember the whole trip the first time we went cost something like £100 for the paid of us, that was 2001 though, fuel and tunnel, we didn't use any Peage.
Nice drive.

I love road trips like that. I flew from Dublin to Salem in S Germany and drove the 1000 miles road trip back home in 23 hours including all boat trips when I bought my Green Syncro. I tried to do it again with my Red Syncro I bought in Kiel (1000 miles) in N Germany. I missed the boat at Holyhead by 20 minutes and failed to do the trip in the 24 hour target.

Neither Syncro missed a beat!

Great right up. Never been to Europe in the Syncro as yet but had a few misadventures in a Bay, a Megane and a Jeep. The bay cost us 3 days in Leige with a dead generator, The Megane had to be recovered home from Paris because of a duff universal joint (Renault wanted £830 to fix that  ) and the Jeep got us about 4 miles from home before I had to get it recovered to the garage to get the hand brake freed off.
Cheers
Rob.

That makes 20 year old Syncros sound reliable! Funny about the Megane though, a friend had huge problems getting a catastrophic radiator problem fixed on his Renault Espace, in France. He couldn't believe they couldn't get parts for it. He drives a T4 now!

i am not sure that your report is entirely complete...
did you not trade flashing driving lights with a grey syncro 16 westy high top somewhere between calais and reims on saturday the 27th.
i was certainly stoked to see what was obviously a 16 ( vattenfall blue hard top transporter) coming the other way. i told my mates that it was the first time i had passed another 16 on the roads. having read this, i concluded it must have been you.
we were on our way down to sion in switzerland to stay in a mates challet for a weeks boarding.
i had full on syncro parranoia before i left too and got aa european cover in place before i left.
the only trouble i had though from st ives in cornwall to sion and back was the merest hint of vanagon syndrome that my truck has been regularly plagued with on long trips. i say it was a hint because i did the "solder a capacitor across two of the air flow meter terminals" fix before i left.
when it happens now, it just misses a beat and then carries on fine.
also i now know that the upstairs westy bed sleeps two fully grown adults with no problems. that is a real bonus on a long trip.
oh...and that the bfg mud terrains new style are excellent in the snow.
and can any one tell me why my all new front brakes get smelly hot when driving down hill in the mountains. surely not right.

Hi,

I also went over the Alps from Grenoble to St. Pierre-d'Albigny to Torino and then up to Aosta and had the same smoking front brake problem as Hotpod. Even though I was using engine braking I made the initial mistake of using the brakes all the time just to keep control of speed as my van is heavy.

I stopped to have a look and immediately realised that if I didn't move on and at least get the some air on the brakes, the heat would have caused the fluid to boil. This time I still used the engine all the time (for braking!) but only the brakes just before the corner and all went fine. By the way, don't breathe in this brake smoke.

I think it was the initial fear of not being able to slow it down enough (not helped by seeing the motorway about 20km away and directly below) that caused the bad braking technique.

My longest drive was from Roscoff to San Sebastian (about 900km) in about 12 hours in a 1970 1200 Beetle. I ate lots of tapas and slept for 2 days!

Oh Yes, it was me! I remember now but I almost missed you in my dazed stupor.

I think all the little 'issues' with these vans are inbuilt to keep us awake on long journeys!
