Hi there

Hoping from a bit of help from the experts out here.

Fancied a bit of camping today but 1/2 mile from the site heard a screaching sound from engine even when stationary. When I looked under the back wheels saw this...

Van is a 1983 diesel with a 1Z TDI conversion done by a previous owner to replace the original 1.6NA engine. We have been recovered back home on a low loader and now need to figure out how to fix. At first I was hoping it would be a case of finding another mount like that above, jacking up the engine, then fitting the new mount and sorting the cam cover which is now rubbing against the pulley. But after a shoving the camera under a few more angles, I've a nasty feeling this is going to be a lot more serious. I see I also seem to be missing a nearside exhaust mount judging by those empty bolt holes on the far right of the above photo. A couple more pictures here...

That one shows at the top left part of a tubular rail that goes front to back with what looks like another bit of engine mount in the center. Towards the camera or the rear of the van is a brown bit that I'm wondering if it is a home made piece done as part of the TDI conversion. I can't quite see where it attaches at the top but it doesn't look right.

The last picture below shows a view from behind the wheel looking backwards. It looks like the turbo may have been in the way of the original 1.6D mount.

So questions are..
1. Is that alloy bit that has fractured, a T25 diesel engine mount or could it be of a 1996 Passat I understand the engine came from.
2. Is the browny coloured steel upright bit another stock T25 part and what should it attach to.
3. Any other observations that I have missed.
4. Anyone got any pictures of the relevant mount on a JX engine or other stock turbo diesel so I can compare
I'm off to search for some threads on TDI conversions now to see if there are any hints as to how to mount the engine properly

That looks like a home made fabricated link between proper diesel engine mount on the rail and your broken alloy mount.
I have a diesel 1.6TD and my alloy mount looks nothing like yours would have. I'm guessing it came with the donor engine.
Trouble is if the fabricated link is'nt bang on dimensionally, then adverse stresses will find the weakest point.

Second photo shows what I think I am going to need - the HA Projekt mount. Going to be dear at almost 250euro but I am sure it will be less than paying the labour for someone else to make one up, especially since the van is now undrivable. Anyone else used these mounts or know of an alternative supplier in the UK. Will have a good look under van tomorrow to make sure nothing else will get in the way of this.

Yes the HA engine mount is a solid bit of kit. You get what you pay for, so worth the money.

HA has been providing parts for TDi conversions for a number of years and 99.9% of those now offering the more important TDI conversion parts get them from HA.

You've done a great job of documenting your conversion there and quite a few of my google searches are leading there for what else I need to check on my vans conversion.

I will be buying that HA mount as soon as they are open again and also their turbo oil drain pipe. For now I've fitted a golf gti mount identical to that which sheared but I'm not going to risk driving it far as I have no way of knowing when it will let go again with the twisting load the mount was never designed for.
