yeah like mine I think they knock their shins into the engine crane on purpose too.

I am sure he is not there to rip you off, but you do have to remember that as these things come apart sometimes it is simpler to simply replace the iffy bits whist it is all easy to do on a bench rather than waiting two weeks for it to go wrong all back in and then doing the next bit.

he most likely wants to see your van in all its glory going up and down the road. £400 fitted including the exhaust is a good price (I paid £300 for the exhaust then bought a load of tools, and ended up removing the engine simply to replace the exhaust, if your old one is good too that is another item you can remove for ifuture / resale), but remember some of your bits will be needed to be moved over, and things like a clutch is only £70 but takes hours to change when it goes (most of time is splitting the engine / gearbox)

Right...you love your van, and you are gonna keep your engine as a spare. Smart move. But read up on how to store it correctly....so that when you need it, it isn't seized!! In the change over, if parts are removed from yours make sure you store them too....coz you will need them if you ever go none-syncro again.

well guys i made a decision and have this morning dropped roxy off to have her engine replaced, i suppose time will tell if it was the right move or not, but this morning as if to reassure me i was doing the right thing for her she played up when i was starting her and made a right old racket on the way there!

i spent last weekend fitting a second hand 2.1 lump [condition unknown] which cost me £350and to be honest if your mechanic was to offer me the same deal i would jump at it! £400 fitted with a bit of history/servicing from a mechanic you know sounds good to me..... or am i just getting too old to be crawling around under my van getting rust and dirt in my eyes,coolant running down my neck and oil up to my elbows. good luck with your new motor

thanks bodgit, i was very unsure but the guys knows what he's on about, he knows the donor vehicle well and its history (48000 miles all on the isle of wight!) and sometimes i think you just have to bow to the superior wisdom of those in the know , like i say time will tell

I would go for it - oh you have (just catching up!).

We had the same dilemma last year - engine dumped water (usual gasket failure) - found a replacement low mileage engine from a pick up that was being scrapped (£500 for that) then paid mechanic about £900 for fitting - and I provided new clutch, exhaust, thermostat housing etc....

OK - I couldn' be sure about the age/history of the replacement (appears to be a genuine VW recon) but I got the chance to drive it before buying it - after a few teething probs - all fettled and another 5000 miles - holidays on the Islands (not yours...), weekend trips out etc - and running on LPG we have a great playtool again

I would have jumped at £400 fitted too - if it goes pear chaped you have two spares - one of which you chop in for an Elite...
