She won't start

Post by barbelbob »

Hello all,

Our T25 1.6td 1990, has decided it doesn't want to play the game. She doesn't want to start. Basically when i turn the ignition on the starter motor kicks in but the engine doesn't fire up. Now i'm not the best with engines (yet), but would this mean a fault with the fuel pump?

Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Rob

Do you put the glow plugs on first ?

When the engine is turning over is there any smoke coming from the exhaust, if there is then fuel is getting through, if not then it isn't.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes the glow plugs come on as normal, but no I don't have any smoke, especially not like the vidoe

Going to get a mechanic friend round tonight to have a gander.

If it is a fuel pump problem, is that a complicated job to replace? Sorry to sound rather ignorant in these matters.

cheers

The first thing to check if a diesel won't start is to make sure you have 12V on the single black wire to the injection pump when the ignition is on. Most mechanical faults with the pumps develop gradually. If this has happened suddenly, suspect either that 12V is not getting to the fuel solenoid, or that the solenoid itself is faulty. I'm told you can check the solenoid thing by unsrewing it and removing the metal plunger and the spring from inside, and then rplacing the solenoid without these two bits. If the engine now works, the solenoid is bust. (I haven't tried this myself though)

If both of these are OK, move on to fuel starvation problems. Leaking pipes, bubbles in the fuel line, choked filters, empty tank!, etc etc.
