Tappet Adjustment - 2 litre A/C
Been having some engine issues recently and has got me thinking I may have set tappets wrong...
Its a 2 litre A/C engine, 1981. As far as I remember, when I set the tappets I backed off the screw, and brought it in till it was just touching both the pushrod and the valve stem (ie no play), then wound it in a further 1 1/2 turns.
However from reading some posts, seems like this is for the 1.9/2.1 engines and NOT for the 2 litre a/c. More specifically this post:
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... t#p7466492" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
where toomanytoys says it should only be half a turn from touching....
What is right for a 2 litre a/c?

Aircool hydraulic tappet setting i would agree with toomanytoys half a turn from touching.The Haynes manual says diffrent two further turns.But on the occasion i repaired a overheated 2ltr cu engine on a T25 i had owned two turns was to much .The engine run much better with half a turn from touching.

Yeah its Hydraulic tappets, it runs fine and has done for a while, just abit down on power. Been looking into reasons why (compressions good), and thought if the preload is too much, the values arent closing properly and sapping my power. However this is just a theory lol

If compression is good then the valves must be closing ok... so I would be looking at timing and fueling, when did it have a new dizzy cap rotor leads (Use only good quality leads, cheapo ones dont last very long), air filter etc etc

Leads has been a while, probably worth replacing. I changed the dizzy a while back to another CU one but I actually think this one is worse and it seems slower lol. Aaaah ill just have to have a mess with it and change a thousand things to end up with the same performance.... lol thanks anyway toomanytoys

It just seems slower, less pick up under acceleration (ie pretty much none). I don't remember it being this bad on the old distributor. Methinks the vac unit is knackered. Reason for changing it was that the old one only had a single vacuum advance (possibly off a later 1.9), so I had been on the lookout for a stock CU one to see if it increased performance. However it seems to of had the opposite effect!
E D I T - By one advance I mean no retard on the vac unit.

If its not working properly then it wont help it.. it does need to be working and it also need setting correctly...
The CU NEEDS the correct dizzy, no 1.6 CT or wbx one should be used, nor should a 009 dizzy..
