Hi all, been doing some searching today and struggling to find collapsable push rod tubes for my 1.6 ct. Are there any other ways of reusing them, fitting new seals and not taking the heads off ? HELP :( :(

yes - pretty much anything beetle related can be used on the CT's - you can also get sprung loaded pushrod tubes too..

Expading tubes on the CT......
* Remove rocker covers
* Unbolt the rockers (2 13mm nuts)
* Pull out the push rods and keep them in order and the right way round - clean and mark them up is the easiest way.
* Pair of tins snips and chop out the old push rod tubes.
* Leave the followers in place
* Clean the seating areas for the rubbers
* Fit the rubbers onto the pushrod tubes
* Insert the tubes (Engine side first I think)
* Expand/allow the tubes to expand
* Put the push rods back in order and the correct way round
* Re-seat the rockers and lightly nip up the 13 mm nuts
* ENSURE THE PUSHRODS ARE SEATED PROPERLY ON THE FOLLOWERS - use a tourch to look down the pushrod tubs.
* Complete the tightening up of the rockers.
* Refit the rocker cover with a new seal
* Go camping
As the CT uses hydraulic followers you shouldn't need to reset the rocker adjusters :ok

For the NON Expading tubes on the CT......
* Remove the engine
* Remove nearly all the tinware
* Remove the exhausts
* Remove rocker covers
* Unbolt the rockers (2 13mm nuts)
* Pull out the push rods and keep them in order and the right way round - clean and mark them up is the easiest way.
* Unbolt the heads
* Most lightly - Discover head/s is cracked (common on CT's) :evil:
* Start sourcing replacement head/s!
* Leave the followers in place
* Clean the seating areas for the rubbers
* Fit the rubbers onto the pushrod tubes
* Put the sealing rings back into the head/s
* Loosely offer up the head/s
* Insert the new pushrod tubes
* Insert the pushrods through the tubes to hold them in the ball park area
* Tighten up the heads a little more and check pushrod tubes are seating properly
* Complete head tightening
* Re-seat the rockers and lightly nip up the 13 mm nuts
* ENSURE THE PUSHRODS ARE SEATED PROPERLY ON THE FOLLOWERS - use a tourch to look down the pushrod tubs.
* Complete the tightening up of the rockers.
* Re-set the tappets - back off the adjusters and working on a cylinder at a time set it to TDC, screw up the adjusters to touching then 1.5 turns in and lock up
* Refit the rocker cover with a new seal
* Re-fit exhausts
* Re-fit tinware
* Re-fit engine
* Attempt to go camping and find you missed connecting something up on the engine! :roll:
* Fix that then get off camping!

You need to reset the tappets on the second job as you have had the heads off.....




As you can see the expanding pushrod tubes save you a TON of work and hassle/hell! :ok

I dont think so.. (the spare type 1 tubes I have dont fit.) it depends if type 1 (beetle) heads have been used on it in the past... the CT uses the same size seals and tubes as the wbx and the only colapsible tubes that were available were £25 each.........

Nice, makes me glad I've got the 2ltr CU engine. I did one side of mine yesterday as only one side was leaking. Well, leaking more then the other anyway and I only have 4 sets of seals with me. It took me about an hour and 40 minutes, but I also did an oil and filter change too. My rockers were held in place with 11mm nuts and I didn't have a socket with me so I had to use a spanner. I also don't have my Haynes with me so it took a while to work out how the long wire clip thing went, but I did it. Going to take it for a run today to see if I did a good job or not!! The only thing I found strange is the rocker is in 2 pieces. Weird. But now I know easy it is I'll be doing the other side when I get some seals.

Just thinking, if it is such a painfull and expensive job to do on a 1.6, is it possible to put gasket sealer/hylomar etc round the ends of the tubes where they enter the head and block to seal it from the outside? Obviously when time and funds allow it could be done properly, but if the tubes are £25 each then it's going to be over £200 just to replace 10p's worth of seals.

Thanks Doug, a very comprehensive guide, just what i needed :ok (definitely not doing the engine out option)

Now need to find collapsible or sprung ones that will fit and will not bankrupt me...

Bugger....Nigel changed the seals (taking extra care to make sure everything was super clean) but there's still a bit of a leak, possibly from the oil strainer which he had to remove as the plug was rounded off - and now its pouring down with roin so he can't get a proper look.

is anything straightforward with these vans??? :evil:

In a word, no!
The seals I did don't leak anymore, so now it leaks from somewhere else!! AAAAAAHHH. Pass the Subaru........

nope - thats why they got rid of Aircooled and its also why they are called Volkswagen! :rollin

thats why they got rid of Aircooled

And replaced it with a water cooled engine where half the head bolts rust! :rofl
