Places to see around S. Germany, Austria and Luxembourg area

Post by syncro up »

Hey

We are planning our first European trip this year after the Syncro meeting around Hannover, Germany and I would like to hear from people who have some experience and recommendations around the areas were going to pass through.

As usually, I’ve tried to cram too much into our journey so some areas listed below will be chopped as we are travelling with a two year old, and need to keep the driving part to a reasonable level with a good mix of busy days and quite days.
Our current route looks like:
Hannover
Frankfurt
Munich
Innsbruck/Liechtenstein
Zurich
Luxembourg (somewhere)
Overnight somewhere near Dunkirk.
Were taking the van so would prefer to see the sights outside of the cites and off the tourist track if possible.

First off, cancel Hannover and Frankfurt as destinations (both exceedingly boring and dull cities)
Travel up the Rhine valley (in particular the bit between Koblenz and Bingen)

On your way south the Technik museum Sinsheim and /or Speyer might be worth a visit, if you're into that kind of thing.

In southern Germany I would recommend the Black Forest region, Lake Konstanz (Bodensee), from there into Austria in the Lechtal (Lech valley)

letzeburg (lux) is great, been three times in last two years, go to the Mullertal area, near Beaufort where the castle is really good, if your near Rudesheim on Rhine visit the `drosslegasse` plenty beer shops and an impressive memorial on the hill, June, the magic bike rally is on and it`s a good place to see all manner of nice motorcycles

We did some of this last year. Fabulous campsite at Staufen am Breisgau in the southern Black Forest. free use of town swimming pool and free train travel - we went to Basel for the day (but should have gone to Freibourg instead!). From there we drove through Freibourg over to Lake Constance (lovely and warm to swim in!) and down to Bregenz where we couldn't find the Aire but did find a mosquito infested camp site! From there we went to Fussen and then on to Munich. We used the municipal site in Munich which was great, and had really good bus/rail/metro links to Munich. Munich itself was fabulous - would have liked more time there to explore - and the Glockenspiel was worth seeing. We then went down to Interlaken and stayed just outside at Iseltwald. We did a whirlwind tour last year (2500 miles in 2.5 weeks) so we are planning to return to Staufen and Iseltwald in the summer and to stay a bit longer.

hi there ,
i live over here in germany and have to agree with the avoid frankfurt and hannover quote .never even been to hannover in11 years as even my german friends say its boring . frankfurt is just a business district as such, nothing goes on there in the night, and its just full of skyscrapers .if you are in frankfurt and travel over the river(main) to sachsenhausen its really good for nightlife .lots of international pubs and lots of foreigners there i had a goood night out there one night.if your heading south from bielefeld thats where the meet is i think? paderborn is a nice city for a look around and theres camping in the centre off town. another town worth a look is rothenberg ab der tauber. complete old medieval city no cars allowed in ,its like going back in time 800 years. beautiful place and has 2 camp sites just out side town. nurnburg is also really good. lovley old town in the centre great night life and also a campsite near to city centre.fussen is really nice, lindau on the bodensee is really nice, about 10 kms from bregenz but a better town for tourists and also as said munich. munich is great but you need a bit of time to see it all . garmisch/partenkirchen is close to munich and thats a great town with a really good campsite in the middle of the town.it also has a great cocktail bar (peaches) on your way north on route to lux. try the rhine valley and the mosel both got great scenery and you can stock up on your wine from the local vineyards.very cheap. any way what ever i hope you enjoy your trip.i only live about 50 kms from the syncro meet so im gonna try and get up there but i think ill be in the czech rep. on excercise . we'll have to see. any way good luck.hope you enjoy.
