Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Been following this with a lot of interest, and have decided to go for it however i ordered the paint from Lawsons almost two weeks ago now plus a batch of rollers, after almost a week with no delivery i decided to contact them to be told they had now been despatched. the rollers turned up the next day but no bloody paint, so chased them up again to be told that it has,nt been delivered to them from their suppliers and would be at least another week now am i being impatient here or what, i just want to get on with it, i have got an old bonnet of a friends Mini all prepped and ready to go as my practice piece, and just cant wait to get started, anyone else had any problems with Lawsons or is it me just getting itchy fingers, as i said earlier

I'm out in East Anglia (Ipswich area) and I note that Kent & Blaxill paint specialists stock Rustoleum. Popped into their Sudbury branch two days ago for something else (concrete floor paint) and they had five or six 2.5 litre tins of Rustoleum Cobicolor in stock on a shelf near the door so assume other branches in the area also keep them. Might be a useful pointer for someone out that way anyway.

Warrants a mention in this thread certainly although it was over £30 a tin (I'm sure it said £38) but perhaps someone can check that out.

maybe its just me then, but its now a full two weeks since my order went in, blimey its only two tins of paint, hopefully this coming week will see them turn up.
is this stuff like gold dust because if it seems diffucult to come by, its not like i,m having a special colour mixed up.
Now the sun is shining i want to get on with it. i dare not start prepping the old girl yet until i have tried me trial on the mini bonnet.

Rollered the van last summer and it was a definite success. Now I've got a bit more confidence, I want to change the colour scheme. Does anyone know what paint code the T25 in the picture is, or rather, if rollering, what paint code/colour would approximate it. Is the one in the picture metallic? Cheers.

I don't think there is a RAL code for pastel white, I got a good match (by eye) mixing RAL9010 & 1018.

This is my first go at roller painting and I want to get the colour to match VW Pastel White as best as I can as I am only doing the bits where I have fixed the rust for now. Later on when I get a bit more confident with the approach I may get more adventerous with the colour.

I've ordered some RAL9010 & 1018 to try and make some Pastel White. You mention that you mixed 5% yellow to 95% white by eye. I know this sounds like a very basic question, but how did you go about actually doing this? Any top tips. Did you use some sort of measuring jug to get an accurate proportion or did you you just keep adding yellow to the white drip by drip until the colour matched that of the van?

Anyone who has ever worked in the print trade can also match colours by eye but do remember that mixing takes a long time indeed and you'll also have to wait a fair old time for any bubbles to dissipate. I think most are taking the view that a close match is good enough and besides, a slight shade change can freshen things up. If you want an exact match, get it mixed by a professional or you'll end up with shade changes when you least expect it. It can be done at home but takes a long time and several goes.

Yep metallic
Would be hard to roller. You could roller a similar blue and then find a metallic to spray the final coat then clear coat but thats a different ball game altogether

I hope to paint a few small repair sections to match the original pasteal white colour rather than the whole van. SoI wan't to try and get the best match that I can. I'm just trying to avoid having it look like some sort of patchwork of various shades of white.

Your chances of matching it by eye are very low indeed. Even body shops use an analyser to get the shade right, then theres the fact that paint fades or changes over time anyway. This project doesn really suit patching unless you have it mixed by a pro and even then it may still look like a patched job. Not trying to put you off but its not easy to do.

And agree with other point above - you can't roller metallic.

Myself and brother in law are rollering our t3 & t4 asap, we have read your thread and to say we are impressed is an understatement. we have decided to do the same colour as it works out cheaper and prob easier...we have chosen satin black.......do you have any tips that apply to doing it in black. Pics will be posted, thank you very much for taking so much time to pass on your knowledge..you get a big thumbs up from us Rhondda boys

Black shows up every tiny dent, so make sure its as smooth as you can get it.

cov kid have you seen any results from anyone spraying rustoleoum ?

It sprays as well as any other paint and some have used rattle cans but again I'd rather not dilute the thread by drifting into a different application technique. This is about rollering specifically and there are thousands of sites on spraying. The reason why I opted not to spray are varied including cost, loss of medium to the air, having to mask and strip so much, the sheer size of the vehicle, ease of touching up later, time off the road, environmental impact etc etc.

Llamapup, for the effort of mixing up a pastel White mix and blending it in with you existing paint it would actually be less work to just paint the whole van! The rustoleum White is pretty bright, but looks great IMO.

I've always said with this to just get stuck in! I made a couple of mistakes on my first coats, but it all flats out. To get good coverage you'll probably need 2-3 coats, and I'd recommend a good 14 days of hardening off between coats, so your vans gonna look a bit dodge for a month anyhow.
