oil in expansion tank T25

I've just acquired a T25 1.6 diesel (1986) and noticed that the expansion tank is full of black gunk. I've heard that the oil cooler is probably at fault rather than automatically concluding a blown head gasket. Is there a way of knowing whether it is definitely the head that's gone or the oil coolant? By the way what's the part number for this oil coolant and is it known by this name exactly, cos there were lots of different parts which controlled temp as far as i could see...

oil coolant? never heard of that.

common issues here are...

cracked head
oil cooler
head gasket

Sorry meant oil cooler! How can I make sure it's one or the other?

easy
either put a known good un on (oil cooler)

or get the coolant sniffed for combustion gasses..

my moneys on a cracked head :cry:

Er.. is it a turbo or non turbo engine?
I thought only the turbo engines have oil coolers and the one you have linked isnt the correct one in any case, thats for the air cooled petrol engine.

It's a non turbo engine. The link comes under diesel and turbo diesel parts so....dunno!

JK dont seperate everything out, only yhr items that have an orange dot are what they have.. but it sems there is no orange dot on the pic for the oil cooler... :roll:

how likely is it to be the head gasket?

If no oil cooler fitted (and am sure the non turbo's dont), then either head or gasket..

oil coolers are on non turbo's as well duck...my 1.6 had one and the 1y were runnin has one.........id'e try another second hand oil cooler with a new o-ring at the top....bout 50p from gsf....trouble is...even if you solve the problem....the oil stays in the system for quite some time........

Experianced this problem with 1.6/n/td & 1Y but on the three occasions it was a head gasket problem .But before the gasket was replaced on the engines the heads where crack & pressure tested then a head skim.Obtained the services of a engine reconditioner for this.Cost wise local for me was aprox £80.00 but this did not include service parts which include gasket head bolts & cambelt + a few other bits.No labour cost as did the work myself."The oil cooler is a suspect for this problem " i did my own test before any work on the cylinder head i connected up a couple of hoses to the inlet & out let & pressurised it with a foot pump.I couldnt find any leakage but i replaced the oil cooler just in case it did when it got hot.I flushed out the coolent system but the black gunk returned.Concluded then it was a head problem .

Thanks guys for some useful info.- couple of questions...now i'm not sure if i've got a diesel or td! On reg cert says engine no. JX054701- does this help? Secondly is there a link to the oil cooler i need? Thirdly what' the best way of flushing the system out? Help much appreciated!

Well a JX engine should be a turbo D.. you should be able to see a turbo hanging off the exhaust manifold if you look under the left rear of the vehicle... Post a pic of your engine bay...
