I am considering a AAZ engine in my 1.9 very tired diesel T25 Reimo.
But what else will I need to make it run apart from the engine itself pump and turbo?

They Lowered the Accelerator arm & removed the top spring cluster, on the Fuel pump, as this is the part that protrudes into / through engine lid,
Pump sits higher on the 1Y and AAZ, -------------------- There you go Jed now you know-------------------

The diesel syncro engine bars are 2" lower than standard 2wd bars - hence the engine lid isn't fouled (if the jobs done right).
PS I do have a variety of diesel conversion parts available syncro or 2wd.

Why are the engine bars lower Pete?

On a syncro it's the fuel tank situation etc Even the petrol ones are different. Upstands onto the chassis are different lengths.
So with the 2wd fitting a 1.9 you have the lid fouling issues because the 1.9 block would be slightly longer, 1.6 lda sits horizontal, 1.9lda sits vertical.
The syncro has that little bit more room allowing for all of that except for the throttle linkage, but entrepenuer Mr Baxter has sorted that one out.

syncro engine is lower to enable the front of the gearbox to be lower so it can have a nosecone to attach the prop to to make it 4wd without modifying the chassis, that's why our engine/ground clearance isn't much more than a 2wd in standard trim and why we try to make them taller
it would have been an interesting brief to Steyr to do the syncro conversion
must use pretty standard shell, obviously fuel tank, front subframe steering rack and suspension and attachments for syncro bits make it different, but it's not that different
must use the existing 5 speed gearbox and make it 4wd and have reduction gearing for at least one forward and reverse gear, must use mostly existing gearbox parts except for reduction gears or readily available standard bearings and use as little additional casing material as possible
must have better ground clearance than standard van
must cost say no more than 2000DM additional to standard production vehicle and add no more than 150kg
must have automatic 4wd, ie idiot proof
obviously I'm guessing at some of it but working on the gearboxes I find it interesting how Steyr did what they did to the existing box
I will have to find a engine code of what is already in my van as I have a 1.9 but on the correct angle and correct sump. I did not think vw did a n/a 1.9 diesel for the t25(might show my limited knowledge) or has mine been changed? ( I thought it had) . My last t25 has the td 1.6 jx engine the same as the mk2 golf , my present engine looks like a mk3 golf engine but I will have to check (bosch pump). Changing to a aaz engine looks quite involved but do able. Do you need to change any electrics (ECU?) or does the aaz engine not have one.?
the 1.9 na is the 1Y which has been put in by someone else les horse than a jx so that might be the explanation why you think it is tired 1y's can be turbo'ed look at wiki under this and mr hutch's posts on the brickyard changing an aaz and 1y are more or less the same apart the exhaust and turbo on the aaz which is the same as the jx set up no ecu just pump wire connections on the aaz (same as one 1Y) Take photos of engine before you take it out to use as reference for putting the new one in esp sender wires etc have fun
