Van won't start (1984, 1.6D)

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone out there could help....

Van is a 1984 1.6 Diesel

Last weekend I went to pick up the van which I'd been using the night before without any problems. It started up fine but after about quater of a mile the engine lost all power and cut out. Tried starting it up again, it did turn over but seemed to fire once for a few seconds then imediately die again. After a tow back to the house I inspected the engine bay and noticed bubbles in the fuel hose between the fuel filter and injector pump. So went to work replacing the filter and fuel line and is now showing no air coming through the pipe to the injector pump but the same thing is still happening, it will turn over, and turn over and turn over, then fire up for a second and die again straight away after expelling a load of grey smoke from the exhaust. Any suggestions on where to start would be much appreciated! Thanks

i might not be right but deisels need priming just thinking some have manuel pump some you can force i e tow / push big push preheaters ok?
