Sounds like you may have end-float issues, check your flywheel pulley is tight. Do you feel a rumbling through the clutch at all ?

'Rattling' is common if you haven't run the engine for a while ... the tapetts drain and need to pump up again as the oil pressure pushes the warm oil back in. It sounds like the breather may be blocked or something dramatic wrong though to push oil out of a correctly seated oil filter.

Where-abouts are you ? Sounds like you may need the services of a known-good garage.

BTW if you tried saying please and thank you a few more people may even chip in with advice.

thank you very much ian your right my language is very dry . manners cost nothing as i tell my kids.the engine had drained down 4/5 weeks sat hanging out bottom of van ,i had aleak ,found a snapped head stud, took piston in sleave out to get @ stud ,then did gaskets had trouble starting again finaly got there run for ten minutes but was on full throttle just to keep it running then pop filter went i assumed ma be i didnt seat filter properly ,fitted another new one the next day same thing happened i think four times now.tapppets are noisy at the mo but also another sound like somethings picking up rattling around ,to explain i thought tappet locking nut had come off but wasnt that sounds like in crankcase but i havn,t been in there.cant afford garage (dont trust em) i havnt had much luck with them in the past .thats just me i,m sure.this engine is a recon done about 400 miles if that im still paying for it.thanks again.

Take it back to the firm who sold it to you .... simple as ! It will/should be under warranty and they have a duty to make it good.

Good luck, Ian :ok

Go back and mention trading standards and goods fit for purpose. You may also care to mention that you happen to be a member of a HUGE VW club with 10,000 (very) odd members who will be fascinated to read how their customer service department reacts.

You definately shouldn't have laid a spanner on it though ..... as far as I'm concerned it's their engine untill the waranty runs out.
