1600cc Aircooled recon heads, best place ?

Post by ghost123uk »

Hi folks

I am helping a friend with his Aircooled motor.

(Actually it is a 1641 conversion of a 1600 motor - but apparently the heads are the same)

We stripped the liners and examined the pistons, rings and liners and they look just fine and measure up just fine too. ( damn site easier to work on than my DG  )

However the heads do seem to need new guides as they do rock more than is considered normal and it was smoking a bit, esp on the over run.

He has been quoted £180 to fit new guides and lap in the valves by a local engine place

Question = Do you Aircooled types out there have any recommendations as to where to get good recon heads at a sensible price (JK being the obvious choice at around £90 each, but are they OK ?)
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Is it a beetle/Bay or T25 CT?? CT's are different to the "type1" engine, but apparently type 1 heads can be used.. BUT I dont know whats different but VW never made a different part for no reason...

Ooops - I have been rumbled

Well sussed out Mr toomanytoys (I wonder how you guessed ?)

Yes it is a Bay ( but it was registered in 1980  )

I reckon he should go for the JK items at £90 each as, apparently they are done by Vega so they should be ok, right ?
