2.1 1990 caravelle intermittent overfueling??

Post by manselsdub »

My bus has run all winter without the problem, until we had a few warm days....then he started again(only twice), but it happened quite often(weeklyish) before the winter. It will either just stall and then fire up like its running very very lumpy and smells very rich from the exhaust..............or it will fire up very lumpy from cold. Apart from this he goes like stink and sounds sweet. When the problem happens it can tick over lumpy and then run sweet after 1 minute to 1 hour. I'm pretty sure its overfueling/choking, but have no idea how to remedy it!!
HELP!! :ok

Find yourself a Robert Bentley workshop manual (Amazon/E bay) for your vehicle, it will give you a clear idea of how and what to check for similar running problems.

Had the very same thing happen to me (California with 2.1 MV CAT) was intermittant at first, usually when hot but then one day it went altogether on the way back from a trip around Europe on the motorway thankfully in the UK, it just got slower and slower, completely over fueling and kicking out loads of crap and eventually came to a stand still and stalled.
Turned out to be a faulty lambda sensor in the CAT part of the exhaust.
Easy way to diagnose is when it has one of it's episodes: trace back the lambda probe wiring and just pull it apart at the connector (in the engine bay) . Should immediately run clean (well after getting rid of any fuel build up) The plug can be left disconnected but the lambda probe will need changing ASAP.

quick one, bit weird but can be the fault - on a 2.1 the vacuum hose for the fuel regulator comes off a small spigot on the plenum chamber under the take off for the brake servo, pull off the hose and ream out the spigot with a small ie jewellers type screwdriver as if this is blocked then the fuel system will be overpressured and will run rich and on a DJ will be reducing the damping of the vacuum advance on the disi
