Engine cuts out
HI guys as my previous threads show I've had more a few problems starting the van recently but since i had an electric pump fitted and a new tank last week (the old one full of rust and sludge) all seemed to be fine now.
I was on my way to Rustmaster today to get some long over due waxoyl treatment done tomorrow.
About 10 miles out of Southampton the engine started to die on me. This was once i hit 45/50 or above. I managed to crawl at low speed along the hard shoulder to Winchester services with the engine occasionally dying on me. It always restarted no problem.
The RAC man had a look at the distributor cap/rotor arm and cleaned out the carb jets etc and a few other things. I drove it round the car park ok but once i got up speed on the motorway again it started cutting out again. Hence one ruined trip and a tow home.
The engine ticks over fine.
So as usual any ideas gratefully accepted.
Many thanks
Dave/Hammy

Re: Engine cuts out
Classic signs of a blockage in the tank - fuel comes out but air cant get in then the fuel stops coming out! have a check of the breather tanks and pipes that sit under the front wheel arches.
Also worth looking at and cleaning/replacing the fuel filters too as if the tank has been changed and the old one was full of sheehite then there s a strong change the filters are also blocked which means when using fuel on motorways the carb drinks more than the pump can supply

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

Re: Engine cuts out
HI Cheers yes replaced the filter today which was dirty this was the other side of the new pump. The one fiited between the new tank and pump was spotless.
Do you think the pump could have crap in from the old tank?
Would it be a case of split pipes to the breather tanks or they have come loose?
Something to do in the morning so here's hoping.
Dave

Re: Engine cuts out
the hoses to the breather tanks should have been replaced as a matter of course when doing the tank.. unless they were very recent...

Think the rac checked the carb filter but i'll have a look myself. The breather pipes were replaced i believe? could anything else be damaged on the breather tanks i should look for?

Re: Engine cuts out
before being sure that it is a breather problem and spending ages sorting that out, try it without the fuel cap on for a bit and see if it runs okay. Then look for a breather issue.
I thought there was another thread on here about an electric fuel pump not being powerful enough, or something like that.

Re: Engine cuts out
HI guys
I had all the breather pipes and fuel pipes checked all fine and brand new. Found the fuel getting to the carb was only a dribble. Enough for slow speeds. Looks like another in-line filter was blocked although it looked clean. The fuel flow to carb now fine.
The engine had been running like a dream round town since i collected the van from my garage last Wednesday but decided to take it for motorway test drive on Friday. Yes you guessed it the engine died on me around 35-40 whilst accelerating. It also backfired this time? I managed to start it first time and it drives as smooth as around town.
Yours baffled of Southampton.

Re: Engine cuts out
HI it could be as I've done a fair few support gigs at the brook for bands in my time. I only live up the hill from the Brook.
