Scary sound at high revs

Post by Fozzie »

One hour ago... Going up a very steep hill in the Peak District, so steep couldn't stay in 2nd for more than 10 seconds at a time, so in 1st at high revs there's suddenly a bing from the back, and a horrible rattle starts. Stays with us - at high revs only - in all gears, though applying firm pressure to the gearstick dampens it. Stopped and got out to investigate, but nothing to see, except for a fluid leak dripping from the exhaust box - though I can't say where it's coming from. It's a thin oil, seems too thin for engine oil (although the engine IS warm at the mo, so maybe), but not sure what else. I don't think it has that smell of pee that people associate with gearbox oil, and the gearbox sump and refill plugs are still firmly in place...

FWIW it's a 1.6TD. It's Sunday, I'm away from home (and without tools/ramps/etc), and need to travel 60 miles before 9.30 tomorrow morning. Any thoughts would be very welcome...

Thin Oil Coming or dripping out of back box indicates to your Turbo. Possibly oil seals in the Turbo,
You have blown the seals on using over maximium revs in 1st & 2nd gear climbing a steep incline as you have said in your post,
What you should have done is left it in 1st gear and and let her go up at just above a medium revs were it feels happy at ( Not Reving the Ballls off it ) If it still starts and runs ok. Then dont take it up to high revs, use your gears correctly, (and not your Right foot) keep the revs down hopefully it will get you home

Unfortunately the Peak District isn't kind on old vans and you need to take things steady, we have a fair few VERY steep hills.

Ian

P.S. if you'd used the help list in Members Only and rung me I could have rung Grumps or another of the Heavy Oil Burner fan club and got the help for you last night. :(

Thanks Ian. I know the area, and would normally avoid the worst hills, but when the satnav leads you to the bottom of one and there's nowhere to go but up...

And thanks Grumpy. Have spent the night mulling and had come to the conclusion that it had to be the turbo, cos there was nothing else it could be. Thanks for the confirmation. Have gone very gently this morning and it drives fine; not going over 50-ish. Hope it's good for 200 miles...

Ah, well, at least I've learnt about the help list then, so it's not all bad news.

Ha. Near TIdeswell. Nothing particularly steep around there you'd think. But the satnav has a habit of taking fancy, pretty diversions along what it thinks is the shortest distance between two points.
