Re: brake back plate
My best advice would be to sell the van then cos if you can't afford £150 but need SAFETY parts and need them in 2 days you've got the wrong vehicle.
That's HONEST advice not BS.

I appreciate what you are saying, will probably opt for jk cheaper by £100 and hundred and fifty on top of two swing arms, plus labour and van tax in one month is why I was hoping for a second hand brake plate, as have just had new shoes, pads, cylinders etc..

Re: brake back plate
S/h back plates are likely to be as bad or soon to be as bad as yours are. If you've seen the Brickwerks ones (and I fitted 2 to our van recently) they are VW standard, galvanised and very heavy. The real shock was how thin the old ones were and they'd just rubbed through on 1 contact point each.

Hi
I have just changed my back plates as they fell apart also, I used JK back plates they are good quality and fit well, heavy gauge but not galvanised I used hammerite undercoat and top coat to protect and so far no rust!
Good Luck

Applologies men. Your right Rob and I was very wrong, where the hell did I get £35 quid from ?
Must have had a silver haired moment. Just cant understand why backplates are so expensive, very important part I know but compare them to a set of brake discs with all the machining involved it just doesn,t seem right. I have just replaced discs, pads drums and shoes on my old Cavalier for under £130 !

Which isn't weight rated at 1 let alone 2.4 Tonnes. The backing plates are a critical part of a critical safety system on a potentially heavy van, the back brakes are very good on these vans and looked after properly work very well.
I personally wouldn't think that the GSF or JK plates will be OEM VW but it's your van so you do what you wish.

Yup your 100% right, not disputing that at all, you would be a fool not to agree but I suppose it is just the way things are. I have worked in a press shop and seen backplates stamped out in two operations.........done and yes very very important but that does not in my opinion justify the high cost, I am just a tight grumpy old man !

Re: brake back plate
Also I like to think long term .... it's another job done that should outlive the rest of the van.
