As a new syncro owner i need a little help :)

Post by Essex Nige »

Well i've shown you the Syncro and now waiting for DVLA to issue the plate so i can play, now before i play i want to know loads...

Now lots of people i've noticed are talking wheels and tyres, so i shall do the same.. Right i'm going 15" wheels as the 14's look like bike wheels off a raleigh budgie, there is talk of "mefro" steels, what do these look like tried to google erm but nada :( so a discription or a photo would be great :)
I have some 15" penta's but to be honest can't be arsed with the new stud, spacer and bolt thing :D

The alround tyre of choice seems to go BFG's which look great and to be honest may well find there way on mine, however i'm going to have to use the syncro to go back and forth to work for a little while as my daily (non syncro) ride needs some work 100 mile round trip, do you think i should stay with the 14's while doing then when i get the other one back do the change then??

Onwards to a pull out awning, i see a few have these, are these mounted on the gutter? if so i take it if this is the case you can't have a fig 8 and a drive away awning as well? maybe this might be better in "camping"

I have other questions but these will do for now :ok

See piccies of Jed,s he,s running Mefros c/w BFG a/t,s.Side pull out awnings clip to the gutter so am pretty sure that would prevent camping awning.

Nip into my garage and you will see 15" Mefros with BFG MT's and 15x7 alloys so you can take your pick

For a 100 mile round trip you'd certainly want normal road tyres, nothing too nobbly and noisy.
I'd leave the 14's on for that. In case you have to buy new tyres, you might want to consider 195/80/14's (they would also fit on a 2WD) as they don't look quite as weedy as the OEM 185/80/14's

Some Mefros and a side awning for you Nige,

Image

The awning goes on some brackets and you could attach a drive away number on the gutter as the other one sits slightly higher. To be honest though i have never really understood taking an awning away with you. We had one but never used it, didnt really know what to do with it when it was erected. Some people say its good to put your "pooh" in, my suggestion would be dont take "pooh" away with you.

AT 15" tyres are just like a road tyre IMHO just abit grippyer...

Do you have a pic with awning out? Do these work in wet weather? I want an awning but don't want to spend £400.

Thanks

I thought 185 14c's were the tyres to use due to weight and alike (ponders future tyre choice)

Yes they work in wet weather, snow, sun etc and it cost £300 inc the fitting brackets and the things that clip the legs to the side of the van. They are very good.

The 195's that I have on are also "C" tyres. As they are slightly beefier than 185's their load index is even higher @106/104, so they more than fulfill the weight requirements even for a camper loaded to the gills.
To my knowledge, there are no off-road type tyres in this size, only normal summer or winter road tyres. Another drawback is that the 195 will not fit in the standard spare tyre holder designed for the 185 (the one under the front) ...not while it's fully inflated, anyway.

Original fitments for the 14" syncro were 185r14C with an option of 205r14C or 205/70r14
the 205's are handy in that they gear up and give a lot more ground clearance, but you wont find any in more than a "winter" tyre.. 205/70's generally dont come in a C rated tyre so only a reinforced option (coupld of brands do a C but only as a "summer" tyre) and are aboutthe same diameter as the 185's so no advantage in ground clearance..

The 195's suggested give a half way house between ground clearance and gearing.. depending on what ratio final drive you have and how much power.. My 78bhp 1.9 DG pulls the 195's nicely, but on my bigger MT tyres wich are the same diameter as the 205's top gear becomes a little lethargic and needs winding up to get along..
I generally run on a set of 185 semperit vangrips, these are used all year round and perform very well, wear seems to be good too they give some reasonable all terrain traction, but do slick up when it get wet and sticky...

The 205/(80)/14 C came with 6" rims ex works. These rims are pretty rare now and not that easy to get.

Some people have fitted 205/14's on the standard 5.5" rims (the ones that came with the 185 tyres ex works) without problems ...me, I wouldn't, as the 195's are already quite balloony on the narrow rim, I'd be worried that 205's would just pop off under stress.

205r14 can be used on 5.5 - 6.5 inch rims without an issue.. :ok

To get a tyre to pop off the rim is neigh on impossible at normal pressures.. if you did.. you would have more serious problems than the tyre :rofl
