Temp gauge going mad?

Post by colinbaines »

Hi, folks,
My 1990 1.9 WBX DG seems to have developed a mad temp gauge!
This morning, checked water level in both the header and top-up tanks -fine.
Turned key, and without starting the engine, the coolant level flashing light flashed AND DIDN'T STOP, and the temp gauge shot up to the top. This was without even starting the engine.
I thought- give it a go- engine started fine, ran fine light still flashing. Evewntually it relented and shot straight back down- light stopped flashing, heater warmed up.All seemed fine.
Gauge then did it again and light flashed. Then it went back down. And stayed down
Am I to assume this is a faulty temp sender switch or something, and otherwise safe to drive?

Check the connections on the temp sender unit and the connections on the cooland header tank ensure they're good clean and tight.

Have you removed the connecting plug from the instrument binacle for any reason lately?
A poor connection there can cause this.

Thanks for replies, folks,
I'll check all the contacts when I've got a mo.
Can I drive it without worrying until I can check?
