Zig no longer charging during journeys

Post by Tatty Chap »

Hi,

Never had a problem with my Zig before, New lesiure battery fitted last year.
In fact I think it was working fine until 2 possible dates

1: New starter motor fitted (However this was some time ago, but the little I used the on board electrics could possibly have been sustained on a fully charged battery during this period (ie the charging capability may have stopped at this point). If im honest I think this was too long ago to be the culprit.

2: MOT last week

I did have to change a fuse a while back, but put a new one in and it worked fine again, still works now but light is red

Drove to Brighton and back last weekend, and hasnt charged the battery at all.

What could be the possible issues ?

to be honest mate they charge at such little voltage id be tempted to fit a relay or a intelegent split relay

It's most likely a in line fuse and if u have a autohomes the fuse is in the cupboard behind the drivers seat...

Its not a standard conversion

its a homebrew with a zig in it

Never had an issue with it in 2 years, and i havent fiddled with it

took some readings from the batteries. 20 from the lesiure 23 from the drivers

fridge was on 12v (toddler plays with it) but 12v system not on so cant be drawing from it can it?

red light on zig doesnt mean low bat, apparently

Eh? 20 and 23?? what? Volts? Amps? that doesnt make sense.....

I think you will have to take the battery off and charge up to see if the battery is actually holding charge..

If it is, then trace the wiring back and see where the voltage "isnt"...

I have a Zig CF9 fitted in my van, Transfered it from a Caravan I owned before getting the T25, I have had my Camper for 9 yrs, a Zig Does not charge your Leisure Battery when running ie (engine mode) For a Zig to charge your Leisure battery you have to be hooked into a mains suply,
As Kev the Rev says your split charge relay is (1) shagged. (2) you have an inline fuse problem on the split charge relay. (3) Sprog playing with 12v switch only means fridge runs off 12v when engine is running via activated link, connection from alternator to relay, as the fridge requires full 8amp to cool it. (3) Red light on Zig only indicates unit is recieving or to let you know its on, there is another light next to it which changes from Green to Red. Green light Leisure state of charge OK. Red indicates low battery power, Re-Charge Leisure Battery
Hope this is of help to you----------------------- :ok

N-B check out your Split Charge --------------- :idea

And dont forget to come back to this thread to let us all know what was wrong with the split charge setup thats in your van.

Sorry but a zig unit does charge the leisure battery when it's switched to touring, secondly before you take of the leisure battery use a multi meter to check the leisure batt. Firstly check voltage with engine running with switch set to onsite, then flick switch to touring and it should read about 14v. If it does then it's your battery, if it doesn't it's more than likely the feed from starter battery to zig unit and I still think it's an in line fuse! to be sure try using a seperate wire to connect the starter battery to the zig unit to be sure! Inside the zig unit the connections are 1 & 2 for the starter and 3 &4 for leisure so check the voltage on these. Hope this helps! I bet you it's a online fuse! And the red light means voltage has dropped to below 11v.

Right

the 20 etc readings were Amps

Reattached live wire (it was attached by a thread and came off in my hand), could that alone be the culprit ?
Volt wise starter was about 12.8 , lesiure was 10.9
Switched 12v system on, saw drain on lesiure battery.

Switched it of, and turned on engine saw a very slow gain on the LB. Thought thats had sorted it, turned engine off, and still saw a slow gain until 10.97 (could this be battery to battery charge after engine off ?)...confusing.

Apologies for being a total dunce on this one.
