Wipers not stopping!!!!!!!!!!!

The wipers on me 1988 autosleeper, have decided to go crazy!!!!!!!!!. Turn ign on pull stalk towards you and washers activate. Then have to move stalk to speed one then wipers come on. (No intermittant wipers fitted).
Now if you try to activate washers when wipers on speed 1 or 2 the washers dont work until you turn the wipers off!!!!
Also if you turn wipers to off position they stop on the screen immediately and DONT return to the horizontal/rest position???.
Any ideas if these are 2 seperate faults or maybe 1. Also maybe where to start looking. Im sure ive had a similar fault before with the wipers on another vehicle not returning to the rest position and i think it needed a new motor.

Sounds like it could be the switch is either loose/cable shorting etc -

Remove the cowling and the steering wheel too as it makes access easier though if you do this make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead first. there are 3/4 screws that hold the switchgear onto the column, make sure they are all tight (dont swing on them as you will strip them!) Whilst you have the cowl off check the wiring to the wiper switch stalk/arm is OK too

Thanks for that. I`ll remove cowlings and check switch and wiring tomorrow. Ta for the response.

Removed cowlings so emery paper on contacts as they looked worn, and hey presto wipers and washers work again. Took longer to refit cowlings than to fix wipers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
